Baidu's Shen Dou: Premature to Define Human-Machine Boundaries, Advocates Concurrent Development and Governance

Deep News10:25

At the "Humanoid Robots: Progress and Leap" sub-forum during the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2026, held from March 24 to 27 in Boao, Hainan, the topic of boundaries in human-machine relationships was discussed. Shen Dou, Executive Vice President of Baidu Group and President of Baidu Intelligent Cloud Business Group, expressed that while humanity hopes to remain dominant, the emergence of machine intelligence necessitates a coexistence between humans and machines. He emphasized that, from a long-term perspective, people should be psychologically prepared to embrace this development.

Shen Dou believes it is too early to define the boundaries of human-machine relationships, as the technology has not yet advanced to the stage where it can fulfill human needs on demand. There is still a long way to go, and the approach should be to proceed step by step while observing the progress.

He suggested adopting a strategy of making quick, small steps, promoting development alongside governance. According to him, concerns about these issues will only become relevant once the technology has truly advanced.
