Executives from OpenAI have indicated that the company's CEO, Sam Altman, intends to brief the Trump administration and U.S. lawmakers next week on its forthcoming next-generation artificial intelligence model. This comes as the United States works to establish safety review procedures for cutting-edge AI systems.
OpenAI's Global Head of Public Affairs, Chris Lehane, stated on Tuesday that Altman's outreach coincides with U.S. officials finalizing a framework for AI safety reviews, which is expected to be completed within the coming weeks. Lehane noted that a portion of Altman's meetings will focus on the company's new model series, including how these models might impact employment.
"We believe this series of models will have some very interesting capabilities, particularly around work and the scaling of work," Lehane said during a briefing in Washington.
In his remarks, Lehane emphasized the need for the United States to develop a more comprehensive AI strategy. He stated that the emergence of new models highlights the necessity for the U.S. to establish unified national standards, partly to ensure the integrity of cyber defenses.
