AI Office Competition Intensifies: Tencent's WorkBuddy Launches 'Human-AI Co-Writing' Feature

The battle for native AI application dominance has escalated over the past two to three years, with desktop office agents now emerging as the new focal point for major internet companies vying to control enterprise entry points. On July 30, Tencent made its latest move in this arena.

Tencent's WorkBuddy released version 5.3.5, integrating with Tencent Docs to officially launch a "human-AI co-writing" capability. This feature allows users to collaborate directly with AI for real-time, synchronous editing within Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Markdown, and other document formats. Meanwhile, Alibaba has recently consolidated several of its agent product lines, including QoderWork, Wukong, and MuleRun, to launch an AI office product called "Qianwen Office," which is now in small-scale internal testing. In parallel, ByteDance is intensifying its enterprise agent strategy around Feishu and Doubao, aiming to embed AI more deeply into office collaboration scenarios.

A clear signal is emerging: as the large model competition enters its second half, AI-powered office tools are being viewed as the most critical battleground for the commercial application of AI large models. In this arena, Tencent has already taken an early lead with WorkBuddy. According to the "China Office Intelligent Agent Platform Market Insights for Q2 2026" report by Analysys, the monthly visits to desktop native AI office agent platforms in China surpassed 60 million in June 2026. WorkBuddy topped the industry with 20.97 million monthly visits, significantly ahead of ByteDance's TRAE Work (domestic version) and Alibaba's QoderWork.

For Tencent, this upgrade to WorkBuddy is not just about adding another AI function; it signals an accelerated investment in AI office solutions. The company aims to leverage its office ecosystem, including Tencent Docs, Tencent Meeting, and Tencent Cloud Disk, to seize the next-generation productivity platform entry point. Functionally, the most significant change in this WorkBuddy update is not that AI can generate documents, but that AI has, for the first time, truly entered the document itself. Many previous AI office products remained stuck in a chat model. Users had to input requests in a chat window, copy the AI-generated content, and paste it into an Office document. If modifications to existing content were needed, users had to re-describe the context, leaving the AI perpetually outside the core workflow.

With this upgrade, WorkBuddy embeds AI directly into the document editing environment. Users can now highlight text in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Markdown files and use natural language to have the AI perform tasks like polishing, rewriting, data analysis, chart generation, and content supplementation. The AI's output is written directly into the original file, and any subsequent user edits are fed back to the AI in real-time for further optimization. Additionally, multiple team members can now collaborate on the same document with the same AI agent. This shift means the AI is no longer just an "assistant" on the sidelines but a true co-creator participating in the work.

This change reflects a shift in the competitive logic of the AI office market. If the past competition was about which model gave more accurate answers, the current battle is about which solution can truly enter the enterprise workflow. The AI must not only understand context but also be able to call upon different tools—documents, meetings, knowledge bases—to continuously complete complex tasks, rather than generating a one-time answer. Since its launch in early March 2026, WorkBuddy has maintained a high frequency of iteration. From continuously enhancing the basic capabilities of the desktop agent, to integrating with Tencent's ecosystem products like Tencent Docs, Tencent Meeting, Tencent Cloud Disk, and ima, and now to launching "human-AI co-writing," WorkBuddy's capabilities are expanding rapidly. Concurrently, WorkBuddy has been quickly developing versions to cover major operating systems, including Windows, macOS, HarmonyOS, and Android.

Tencent's heavy investment in WorkBuddy is driven not only by the high demand for AI office scenarios but also by their high value. Dowson Tong, Senior Executive Vice President of Tencent Group and CEO of the Cloud and Smart Industries Group (CSIG), previously stated that WorkBuddy has a clear business model within enterprise scenarios. He likened WorkBuddy to Tencent Meeting from a few years ago, possessing both ToC (consumer) and ToB (business) attributes. He emphasized that Tencent would leverage WorkBuddy's C2B capabilities to build a sustainable service system. However, enterprise office scenarios are far more complex than personal AI assistants. Factors such as model accuracy, permission management, data security, cross-system execution capabilities, and the accumulation of enterprise knowledge will all determine whether an AI office product can truly integrate into core business processes. For Tencent, Alibaba, and ByteDance, the real competition is no longer about who has a model with more parameters. Instead, it is about who can first reconstruct the way people work for eight hours a day. This challenge tests an organization's ability to connect with scenarios, its engineering capabilities, and its keen insight into user pain points.
