Tech giant Apple has formally initiated legal proceedings against artificial intelligence company OpenAI, alleging the firm behind ChatGPT unlawfully appropriated its trade secrets while developing competing hardware. This move signals a sharp deterioration in the relationship between the two companies since they entered a technical partnership back in 2024.
In its legal filing, Apple contends that several former employees who left to join OpenAI took confidential technical information with them when they changed positions. Apple asserts that OpenAI is now heavily engaged in developing its own branded hardware devices. This strategy aims to bypass reliance on third-party channels and connect directly with end consumers, and Apple claims this development work illegally leverages its intellectual property. In response to these allegations, OpenAI has issued a public statement firmly denying the claims.
End of a Collaborative Phase
Analysts note this lawsuit effectively marks the end of the early collaborative phase between the two firms. In 2024, Apple and OpenAI struck a strategic deal to integrate ChatGPT into the Apple Siri voice assistant ecosystem. However, as OpenAI's strategic focus has extended into hardware manufacturing, direct competition between them in the core consumer electronics arena has become unavoidable.
