Shanghai's Air, Sea, and Cruise Ports Experience Surge on First Day of May Holiday

Deep News05-02

The May Day holiday period commenced, bringing a significant surge in passenger travel and economic activity to Shanghai's major ports. The airport witnessed climbing passenger numbers, cruise ship inbound tourism continued to heat up, and cargo ships smoothly cleared customs on the first day of a new China-Africa zero-tariff policy. These three sectors operating at high capacity simultaneously showcase the vibrant openness of Shanghai's ports.

On May 1st, Shanghai's two major international airports, Pudong and Hongqiao, were the first to experience a peak in inbound and outbound passenger traffic. According to data from the Shanghai Immigration Inspection Station, immigration authorities inspected a total of 113,000 passengers at the air ports that day, with 61,000 of them departing. The growth in passenger flow is attributed to a holiday overlap effect. The spring break for primary and secondary schools in the Shanghai region seamlessly connected with the May Day holiday, creating an extended 8-day vacation period. This spurred enthusiasm for outbound travel among many family tourists, with short-haul cross-border family trips becoming particularly popular. Destinations such as South Korea, Thailand, and Hong Kong, China, were among the top choices.

Inbound tourism for foreign tourists arriving via cruise ships has also become a new hotspot. On May 1st, the cruise ship Spectrum of the Seas, carrying over 5,000 passengers, docked at Shanghai Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal. Foreign passengers accounted for 45.5% of the total. Concurrently, a growing number of international tourists are choosing to fly into Shanghai and then transfer to cruise ships to continue their journeys. This "flight + cruise" hybrid travel model is gaining popularity. This travel style not only extends the stay duration of international tourists in Shanghai but also simultaneously boosts cultural and tourism consumption, injecting new vitality into the inbound tourism market.

The cargo port also got off to a strong start, with the new China-Africa zero-tariff policy taking effect. On May 1st, the first day of China's comprehensive implementation of a zero-tariff policy for 53 African countries with which it has diplomatic relations, the Phase V terminal of Shanghai Waigaoqiao Port welcomed the Singapore-flagged container ship "Shun Cheng," the first vessel to benefit from the new policy on its inaugural day. After the ship docked smoothly, 24 containers fully loaded with African goods successfully entered the country. The cargo included a variety of products such as mechanical equipment, coffee products, rubber, and daily commodities.
