On the morning of April 11, Beijing time, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman published a blog post stating that a Molotov cocktail was thrown at his home around 3 a.m. local time. Fortunately, the device bounced off, and no one was injured.
Altman shared his blog on social media, noting, "I wrote this early in the morning but was unsure about publishing it. Now it's out there." In his post, he mentioned that someone had recently alerted him to an inflammatory article about him. The person suggested that, given public anxiety about artificial intelligence, the article could put him in a dangerous position. At the time, Altman did not take it seriously. Now, however, he feels angry.
Altman first shared a photo of his family, expressing his love for them and hoping the image's power might deter anyone considering a similar attack. He then shifted to discussing his views on the development of AI.
"It is my moral responsibility to work towards a better life for everyone, to empower all people, and to advance science and technology," Altman stated. He believes artificial intelligence will become the most powerful tool for expanding human capabilities and potential. The demand for such a tool is virtually limitless, and the world deserves to have AI, he argued.
However, Altman acknowledged that the path forward will not be smooth. He said fears and anxieties about AI are justified. People may be witnessing the largest societal transformation in history, making it essential to ensure safety throughout the process. A collective societal response is needed to address new threats, including establishing new policies to help navigate difficult economic transitions.
Specifically, he emphasized that AI must be democratized; power should not be overly concentrated. The most critical decisions about the future should not be made by just a few AI labs. Furthermore, no one yet fully understands the immense impact of superintelligent AI, making adaptability crucial.
Altman also reflected on his own work. He said he can think of many achievements he is proud of, as well as many mistakes. Regarding the legal proceedings following Elon Musk's lawsuit, he recalled firmly resisting Musk's attempt to unilaterally control OpenAI, expressing pride in that decision and relief at having navigated a difficult situation.
Conversely, Altman expressed pain over his conflict with OpenAI's previous board of directors, admitting he handled the situation poorly and caused significant disruption to the company. "Throughout OpenAI's development, I have made many mistakes. I am an imperfect person, but I try to improve a little each year. The risks associated with AI are substantial, and disagreements between people can be amplified. I apologize to those I have hurt," he stated.
Altman described the past few years at OpenAI as extremely tense, chaotic, and high-pressure. However, he noted that OpenAI is now a major platform rather than a disorganized startup and must operate in a more stable and predictable manner.
Regarding the industry, Altman commented that there have been dramatic conflicts in recent years, which he attributes to the notion that "once you have seen AGI, you cannot unsee it." The obsession with "being the sole master controlling AGI" possesses a power akin to that of the "One Ring," capable of driving people to extreme actions. The only solution he can envision is to ensure the technology benefits the broad population, preventing any single entity from monopolizing this "ring." He further emphasized that work must advance within a democratic framework.
"We welcome constructive criticism and debate. Overall, I still believe technological progress can make the future better. While engaging in debate, we should reduce conflict and minimize 'explosions,'" Altman said.
The investigation into the firebombing incident described by Altman is ongoing, and it remains unclear whether it is connected to public concerns about AI. A statement released by US police on social media may be related to the event. The statement did not identify the targeted house as Altman's but mentioned that police were investigating a fire at a residence in North Beach. It was reported that an unidentified male threw an incendiary device at the home, causing a fire on an exterior door. Police subsequently arrested a 20-year-old male. The case is still under investigation.
This incident comes at a critical time as OpenAI moves forward with plans for a public listing. Beyond the attack on his home, Altman has recently faced other challenges.
Recent reports indicate that Tesla CEO Elon Musk is seeking to remove Altman from his positions as CEO and board member at OpenAI. The related court case is expected to begin later this month. In a court filing, Musk stated the lawsuit aims to "reverse OpenAI's transition to a for-profit structure and its reorganization," which would involve stripping Altman of his leadership roles. In response, OpenAI has sent letters to the Attorneys General of Delaware and California, accusing Musk of "spreading false and baseless allegations" and requesting officials investigate Musk and associates for "improper and anti-competitive conduct."
