Google Staff Petition CEO to Block Military Use of AI Technology

Deep News00:31

More than 560 Alphabet employees have signed a letter addressed to CEO Sundar Pichai, urging him to prevent the U.S. government from utilizing the company's artificial intelligence technology in classified military operations.

The letter stated: "We want to see AI benefit humanity, not be used for inhumane or extremely harmful purposes. This includes, but is not limited to, lethal autonomous weapons and mass surveillance."

According to two participants, the letter to Pichai was coordinated by employees from Google's AI lab, DeepMind. Approximately two-fifths of the signatories are from AI-related departments, a similar proportion work in the cloud business unit, and the remainder are from other teams across Alphabet.

The letter has been signed by more than 18 senior staff members, including directors and vice presidents.
