Shanghai Airports Surpass 4.5 Million Tonnes in Cargo Throughput for 2025, Ranking Second Globally

Deep News2025-12-31

At the second 2025 meeting of the Shanghai Air Port Consultation Mechanism held on December 30, it was revealed that the annual cargo and mail throughput for Shanghai's two major airports, Pudong and Hongqiao, is projected to exceed 4.5 million tonnes in 2025. Specifically, Pudong International Airport alone is expected to handle over 4 million tonnes, once again surpassing Memphis International Airport in the United States. This solidifies its position as the world's second-busiest cargo airport, trailing only behind Hong Kong International Airport.

During the meeting, the commencement of trial operations was announced for the Pudong Airport Smart Port Cargo Terminal and the Customs Smart Cargo Inspection Center. The Pudong Airport Smart Port Cargo Terminal is a critical piece of freight infrastructure for the development of the Shanghai international aviation hub. It incorporates advanced air cargo management concepts and operational models from Swissport, and its construction and operation will fully integrate new concepts and technologies aligned with smart airport development.

The Customs Smart Cargo Inspection Center achieves a fully digitalized connection for the entire process of cargo from arrival, through sorting, to final departure from the warehouse. Users will experience an intelligent inspection service characterized by "zero-contact supervision and zero-waiting clearance," which will further empower the construction of the Shanghai international aviation hub.
