Over the past five years, Guangzhou's strategic emerging industries have expanded significantly, with their added value surpassing one trillion yuan and accounting for more than 30% of the city's GDP. More than 3,300 industrial projects, each valued at over 100 million yuan, have been established.
At a press conference on Guangzhou's modern industrial system development during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, Yang Xiaoyan, Deputy Director of the Guangzhou Development and Reform Commission, highlighted the city's commitment to integrating industrial and technological advancements to foster the growth of strategic emerging industries.
Yang noted that industrial investment in Guangzhou has achieved double-digit annual growth over the past five years, with the added value of advanced manufacturing now accounting for 60% of the city's large-scale industrial output. The city has successfully cultivated two national-level strategic emerging industrial clusters and four national-level advanced manufacturing clusters. Additionally, 465 national-level "specialized, refined, and innovative" small giant enterprises and 22 national-level manufacturing champion enterprises have emerged.
Guangzhou has also promoted the integration of manufacturing and services through digital transformation, intelligent upgrades, and network connectivity, reshaping its industrial advantages. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the city established six advanced manufacturing clusters and ten service industry clusters, each with an annual output exceeding 100 billion yuan. It also secured approval for two national-level AI application pilot bases, introduced 57 large-scale AI models, and established over 30 specialized AI industrial parks, with a total computing power exceeding 39,000 P.
By leveraging digital and intelligent technologies, Guangzhou has revitalized 510 specialized markets and 70,000 consumer industrial enterprises, giving rise to "phenomenal" companies like Shein and TEMU. Traditional industries such as apparel, cosmetics, food, and home furnishings have also been rejuvenated and strengthened.
In fostering strategic emerging industries, Guangzhou has attracted more than 3,300 industrial projects valued at over 100 million yuan, including 34 projects exceeding 10 billion yuan. Major projects like Yuexin Semiconductor, LG, and TCL China Star Optoelectronics have been completed, while the country's first mycelium protein bio-manufacturing facility has commenced construction. The world's first mass-production facility for flying cars has also begun trial operations.
Unicorn enterprises have flourished, with Yuexin Semiconductor becoming the first 12-inch wafer manufacturer in the Greater Bay Area. GAC Aion was recognized as the world's only "Lighthouse Factory" for new energy vehicles, and EHang became the first globally certified eVTOL operator with all necessary permits.
Guangzhou has proactively explored future industries aligned with national needs, local capabilities, and market trends. National strategic scientific and technological capabilities have accelerated, with the Guangzhou Laboratory producing dozens of key achievements, including the world's first anti-influenza PB2 drug and seven other approved drugs and vaccines. Breakthroughs in core technologies have been achieved, such as the successful launch of the solid-fuel carrier rocket "Lijian-1" and the trial voyage of China's first independently developed ocean drilling vessel. The city has also pioneered the development of deep-sea operational robots and submersibles.
"We are driving innovation in modern services, enhancing the quality and efficiency of producer services, and elevating the overall level of the service sector," Yang explained. Guangzhou has expanded its modern commerce and exhibition industry, with the Canton Fair Phase IV opening and the city ranking second nationally in exhibition space. Trade now spans over 210 countries and regions.
In logistics and supply chains, Guangzhou has established itself as a national logistics hub, leading the country in express delivery processing volume. For technology and professional services, the city has deepened pilot programs for transforming scientific achievements around the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and streamlined professional licensing for 57 overseas qualifications across 10 fields, including law and accounting, for Hong Kong and Macau professionals.
In modern finance, Guangzhou ranks fourth nationally in premium income and domestic and foreign currency deposit and loan balances, with green loan balances leading the province.
To support industrial growth, Guangzhou has strengthened resource allocation and built a business-friendly environment. Initiatives like the "Gathering Talents in Guangzhou" plan have attracted 71 full-time academicians and positioned the city as the third-largest hub for foreign professionals in China. The city has also established funds totaling 200 billion yuan for infrastructure, 150 billion yuan for industrial investment, 50 billion yuan for venture capital, and 10 billion yuan for angel investments, alongside a 5 billion yuan fund for scientific and technological innovation.
Industrial land reserves have expanded to 626.7 square kilometers. Guangzhou has also developed a regional university technology transfer center and a Greater Bay Area scenario innovation hub, launching over 100 pioneering application scenarios.
