Starting point for investigation
Hong Kong-born cryptocurrency investor Harry Chun Tak Yeh was recently reported to have fallen from the 30th floor of a luxury apartment in Paraguay. Around 4:30 AM local time on August 7, Yeh was found lying on the ground below a high-end residential tower named "Jade Park" in the Trinidad district of Asuncion, with a black plastic bag covering his body. The door to his 30th-floor apartment was found wide open, and the interior was in disarray. Authorities have not yet ruled out the possibility of third-party involvement.
Uncertainties surrounding the fatal fall from a height of 100 meters
Preliminary police investigations suggest that Yeh may have jumped from the 30th floor of the building. Local police, prosecutors, and forensic technicians arrived at the scene immediately to begin their work. Due to the fall height of nearly 100 meters, Yeh's body suffered severe traumatic injuries, making it difficult for officials to initially confirm his identity. Paraguayan Police Commissioner Francisco Avalos confirmed to the media that the loud noise heard by multiple nearby residents in the middle of the night was the sound of the human body hitting the ground after the fall. Investigators found a handwritten note and several small stones near the body, but local media have not disclosed the contents of the note, and law enforcement has been unable to determine if these items are directly related to the fatal incident.
Yeh, who was approximately 40 years old, owned two units in the community: a 30th-floor office and a 27th-floor residence. When police entered the 30th floor, they found the office door open, the contents of the room disheveled, a narrow table placed near the balcony, and a glass window of similar width to the table open. The glass bore handprints and signs of possible support. Food remnants were also found in the office. Investigators suspect that Yeh may have used the table or glass for support before falling. Police later located Yeh's partner, 29-year-old Brazilian national Isadora de Proenca Braganholo Carvalho, in the same building on the 27th floor. She told police she had no knowledge of the incident and has not been charged. As the case is still in its preliminary investigation stage, police have not released a definitive conclusion on the cause of death. Whether Yeh's death was an accident, suicide, or involved other factors remains to be determined by further investigation and forensic examination.
From Microsoft to cryptocurrency: Buying Bitcoin at $60
Public records indicate that Yeh was around 40 years old, born in Hong Kong, and moved to Canada at a young age. He later earned a degree in electrical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MBA from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. He began working at Microsoft in 1999. In 2013, when the price of Bitcoin was just $60, Yeh entered the cryptocurrency market by buying the dip, a move that earned him his first major fortune. This action is widely cited in the crypto investment community as a classic example of early, precise market timing. He subsequently worked in over-the-counter trading at Binary Fintech Group before founding Quantum Fintech Group, a firm focused on cryptocurrency and blockchain project investments.
This timing is notable. In 2013, Bitcoin was still far from the influence it holds in today's digital asset market, with significant differences in market size, institutional participation, and regulatory frameworks. Yeh's decision to enter the digital asset market at this stage positioned him as one of the early investors in the cryptocurrency space. As the digital asset market expanded, Quantum Fintech's business also grew. As of this year, the company is reported to manage assets exceeding $2.4 billion (approximately 16.2 billion RMB). In addition to his own asset management business, Yeh was also an early investor in cryptocurrency platforms, serving as a seed investor for LIF3 and L3 Reserve.
It is worth noting that the cryptocurrency industry has seen several deaths in recent years. In 2025, Faruk Fatih Özer, the founder of Thodex, a defunct Turkish exchange, died in prison. His lawyer stated that he was isolated and refused to see family, with preliminary forensic assessments pointing to suicide. In the same year, Ukrainian cryptocurrency figure Konstantin Galish was shot and killed in a car in Kyiv. Police mentioned that at the time of a severe market downturn, the deceased had suicidal tendencies and left a farewell message.
