Stock News10-26 10:28

Guosen Securities Co.,Ltd. has released a research report noting that as AI video generation capabilities cross the threshold of commercial普及, the advantages of AI short dramas over short videos in terms of thematic diversity and content freedom are becoming increasingly prominent, and the industry scale is expected to continue expanding at a high speed.

From a competitive landscape perspective, downstream distribution platforms adopt market-oriented traffic purchasing and competitive mechanisms that weed out the weak, pushing short drama producers to shift from extensive expansion to refined operations, and the competitive landscape is expected to improve. The report recommends paying attention to platforms with traffic entrances and distribution capabilities, as well as production companies with high-quality IP, mature AI workflows, and stable hit rates.

Industry Trends: Improved Model Capabilities Drive AI Short Dramas Toward Realistic Live-Action and Industrialized Production

Compared with online novels and long-form videos, short dramas serve as a low-viewing-cost, mildly addictive consumer product with high audience tolerance for product quality, but strong demands for timeliness and sensory stimulation, making them highly compatible with AI's industrialized production capabilities.

After the release of Seedance 2.0, video generation quality improved significantly, and the monthly number of new realistic AI-generated dramas on Douyin's native AI drama channel rose to 25,000.

From September to October 2026, the penetration rate of AI dramas and anime dramas in leading domestic and overseas short drama apps rapidly increased to 90%. Currently, AI has deeply penetrated links including character creation, scriptwriting, image generation, voiceover, and post-production editing, bringing the cost of a single drama down to 30,000 to 80,000 yuan. Meanwhile, leading teams are building competitive barriers by developing in-house workflows to boost production capacity and stability.

Domestic Market: User Scale and Viewing Time Grow Simultaneously, with Hongguo and WeChat Ecosystem Forming Head Effects

In May 2026, short drama app MAU and monthly per-capita usage time increased by 77% and 77% year-on-year respectively to 402 million and 26.9 hours. Combined with WeChat and Douyin mini-programs, the deduplicated user scale of short dramas reached 851 million.

Compared with short videos, AI short dramas are highly compatible with their users' viewing habits and, backed by AI capabilities, form advantages in thematic diversity and content freedom, enabling rapid conversion of social hot topics and popular terms into their own material, with stronger potential for propagation and expansion. Currently, per-capita usage time and user volume still have broad room for growth.

From a competitive landscape perspective, Hongguo reached 370 million MAU in June 2026, with a short drama app market share of about 90%. Green Bubble and WeChat short drama mini-programs reached 508 million MAU in May 2026, becoming the largest single user entrance.

Business Model: Producer Profitability Depends on Stable Hit Rates, Midstream Producers Continue to Be Eliminated

Based on a settlement price of 15 yuan per 10,000 views, an AI short drama with a single-drama cost of 9,100 yuan needs about 6.07 million views to break even on gross profit.

Among Douyin native short dramas in 2025, episodes with over 10 million views accounted for only 4.4%, and episodes with over 100 million views accounted for 0.2%. However, one hit exceeding 100 million views can cover the cost of about 15 dramas, making stable hit output an important guarantee for corporate profitability.

Overseas Market: Asia Contributes Download Growth, North America Has Stronger Payment Capability, Chinese Short Drama Platforms Occupy Global Top Positions

Currently, overseas short drama channels consist of "TikTok plus short drama apps." In 2025, short drama app downloads in Asia reached 1.29 billion, ranking first globally, while North America generated 4.3 US dollars in in-app purchase revenue per download, leading in monetization efficiency.

From a competitive landscape perspective, TikTok penetrates the short drama industry across the entire process from "production to distribution to monetization." Among short drama apps, ReelShort and DramaBox maintain leadership in major markets by virtue of IP resources and first-mover advantages, while DramaWave achieves rapid expansion through an AI tool closed loop encompassing models, production tools, and distribution platforms.
