xAI is pushing the boundaries of its AI assistant Grok further by launching Build Mode, a feature with real-time generation capabilities that enters the competitive arena of AI programming and development tools.
On Tuesday, xAI announced that its AI assistant Grok has officially launched Build Mode. Users simply describe their needs in natural language, and Grok can instantly generate functional websites, applications, games, or interactive data dashboards within the chat interface, allowing users to publish them via a link with one click for others to access.
The feature is currently available as an Early Beta to SuperGrok Heavy subscription users, supporting web, iOS, and Android platforms.
Where to begin
The launch of Build Mode marks xAI's move to extend Grok from a Q&A and content generation tool towards an end-to-end development platform. This positions it in direct competition with AI coding tools such as Microsoft's GitHub Copilot, Anthropic's Claude, and OpenAI's GPT.
As of press time, SpaceX shares rose 2.8% during trading, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 4%. Previously, the market held a pessimistic outlook on SpaceX's AI business development.
No installation, no configuration, development through conversation
According to xAI's product description, once a user describes a build goal to Grok, it will automatically generate code and display a real-time preview within the chat window.
Users can then iterate continuously, adjusting layouts, adding features, or modifying styles without installing any software, performing environment configurations, or directly touching the underlying code.
xAI emphasizes that Build Mode covers a wide range of use cases:
For websites, it includes landing pages, personal portfolios, and corporate sites. For applications, it covers practical tools with real states and logic, such as planners, trackers, calculators, simulators, and internal efficiency tools. For games, it supports generating arcade racers, puzzle games, and interactive 3D worlds. For interactive dashboards, Grok can connect to user business data via connectors, transforming it into real-time, filterable chart views.
Once content generation is complete, users can publish the final product to a grok.me link or bind it to their own custom domain, then share the link with team members or any external users. This publishing mechanism lowers the barrier for distributing creations, giving Build Mode-generated content a certain level of commercial viability.
Temporarily available to heavy subscription users
Currently, Build Mode is in early testing and only open to SuperGrok Heavy subscription users.
Users can access the feature by selecting the 'Build' entry in the mode switcher on grok.com or the Grok mobile app. xAI has not yet disclosed a specific timeline for opening the feature to a broader user base, nor has it revealed whether Build Mode will be offered as a separate subscription tier or bundled into existing plans.
