Apple's Vice President and Managing Director of Greater China, Ge Yue, took the stage at the China International Big Data Industry Expo in Guiyang on August 28th, delivering a keynote that reinforced the company's long-term commitment to the Chinese market. Her appearance marks another public statement of Apple's strategic positioning in the country.
With over three decades of operations in China, Apple highlighted that the App Store ecosystem has more than doubled developer revenue and sales in the region over the past six years. The company's investment in Guizhou has been substantial, beginning with a $1 billion initial injection into the iCloud Gui'an data center in 2018, followed by continuous capital additions reaching billions of dollars. Ge emphasized that the partnership with Guizhou Big Data Group has spanned more than eight years, with plans to deepen cooperation with local partners on innovation initiatives.
On the social responsibility front, Ge detailed the outcomes of Apple's educational programs in China. Through initiatives such as "Wisdom Garden Teachers" and "Wisdom Classrooms," the company provides training and technical support to rural educators nationwide. The former alone has reached 100,000 teachers and 1.38 million students across Bijie, Zunyi, and Tongren in Guizhou. Additionally, farmers in Shiqian County and Yinjiang have received modern management and operations training through the "Prosperity Workshop" project. Since 2020, Apple has donated a cumulative 350 million yuan to education and rural development causes in China.
In terms of environmental stewardship, Ge revealed that the Gui'an data center, operational since 2021, is fully powered by renewable energy and was recently recognized as one of the national top ten water-saving cases this year. Apple describes this facility as a "world-leading green data center management practice." This aligns with the company's broader "Apple 2030" initiative announced in 2020, which targets carbon neutrality across its entire supply chain and product lifecycle by 2030, alongside a 75% reduction in carbon emissions compared to 2015 levels. The Gui'an facility stands as a cornerstone of this goal in China, being the first large-scale data center in the country to achieve 100% renewable energy usage and earning LEED Gold certification. Globally, Apple's greenhouse gas emissions have already dropped by more than 60% from the 2015 baseline, with continued progress toward the 2030 carbon neutrality objective.
Privacy and security were also central to Ge's address, as she underscored that "in today's rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and the digital economy, privacy and security are more important than ever." She asserted that trusted computing infrastructure and secure data management will grow in significance in the AI era. Apple's decision to make public statements at the expo signals a clear intent to intensify its presence in China, with the Gui'an data center serving as a critical infrastructure hub and a showcase for localized investment and compliant operations.
