Taiwan's Compal Electronics Warns: Memory Chip Price Surge to Persist Through 2027

Taiwan-based laptop and personal computer manufacturer Compal Electronics indicates that the upward trend in memory chip prices is expected to continue until 2027, significantly impacting the entire industry.

The company forecasts a single-digit percentage decline in global laptop and personal computer shipments for 2026.

Compal Electronics CEO Anthony Peter Bonadero stated, "We believe the entire market is bound to be affected." He further added that, benefiting from its customer structure advantages, Compal's own laptop and PC business is anticipated to remain stable or achieve slight growth.

Bonadero remarked, "The current memory chip market is in an unprecedented super-cycle."

The world's three largest memory chip manufacturers—Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron Technology—have all indicated in recent months that due to tightening memory chip supply driven by the AI data center construction boom, companies are struggling to meet market demand.

Bonadero pointed out, "We anticipate that the memory chip price fluctuations emerging by the end of 2025 will persist further into the future, with the three major memory chip manufacturers prioritizing production and supply of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) required for AI servers."

He stated that memory chip costs typically constitute 15% to 18% of a personal computer's material cost, but currently, this proportion could potentially rise to as high as 35% to 40%.
