The rapid rise of AI technology has sparked a new trend where tech companies are actively recruiting liberal arts graduates, opening up fresh employment opportunities for humanities disciplines. Combining a liberal arts background with AI skills is becoming a distinct advantage in the job market, prompting many university students in these fields to proactively learn cross-disciplinary skills and adapt to new market demands, thereby unlocking entirely new career avenues.
At a job fair, positions at AI and other tech companies were notably popular, drawing interest from students with humanities and social science backgrounds. One student shared that many of their peers in the liberal arts are now learning programming, aiming to merge their humanistic knowledge with AI capabilities. Student Zhang Jingfu said: "I visited a company focused on archives. In the process of organizing and collecting archives, there's now a greater emphasis on using AI skills to improve efficiency." Another student, Xu Huijuan, noted: "Liberal arts students often have better creativity and imagination. Their understanding of products or interpersonal communication helps in developing software or products that are more market-oriented." This unique value is driving students to pursue a composite skill set of "humanities or other disciplines plus AI technology," which has also become a key consideration for companies during recruitment.
Chen Chaoqun, Director of the Career Development Guidance Center at Tsinghua University, stated: "This year, the employment progress of graduates from our School of Humanities, School of Social Sciences, School of Marxism, and Academy of Arts & Design is faster than the same period last year. We often say that in the age of AI, we must emphasize the humanities, humanistic spirit, and humanistic literacy, and highlight the value of people. We believe that as new business formats and job positions emerge, liberal arts students will play a unique and important role in these new fields and tracks."
Behind AI Products: Humanities Refine Technology's Temperature
As AI technology rapidly advances, it's not just STEM talent that is in demand. Professionals with a solid humanities background are playing an increasingly active role in the AI industry. In areas like product design and model training, the empathy, aesthetic sense, and perception of liberal arts graduates help fill the gaps in technology, injecting warmth and care into artificial intelligence. Liu Haoyan, who has a humanities background, works at an internet company designing AI companions for the elderly. Having grown up with her grandparents, Liu has a deep understanding of their emotional needs for companionship. She and her team developed a toy parrot for seniors that not only facilitates normal interaction but also speaks in dialects, performs opera, and has an emergency call function, catering to the hobbies and needs of the elderly.
Liu Haoyan, a product manager at an internet company, explained: "When you use these abilities to perceive, and you ground yourself in humanistic, people-centered thinking to observe and understand, you can achieve a truly good user experience." Liu has observed that in scenarios where models need to perform literary creation or provide emotional companionship, the role of humanistic literacy is becoming more critical. "In model training, we are now starting to recruit more students with humanities backgrounds. Besides those who know how to correct algorithms and know how to build the wheels, we also need people who understand where the car's trajectory should lead. Only when these two groups work together can the model be effectively integrated into real life," Liu added.
Shi Yu, a technical recruitment manager at an internet company, noted: "Many companies, when training models, need to use human raters to score the model for reinforcement learning. For example, if our model needs to strengthen its capabilities in a specific vertical niche, the aesthetic sense and future-oriented creativity accumulated by liberal arts students from relevant majors can be applied to improve the overall efficiency of the model."
Integrating Technology and Humanities: Nurturing Composite Talent through School-Enterprise Collaboration
The rapid iteration of AI is reshaping all industries, subtly changing the capabilities required by the market. Facing the new opportunities of the AI era, talent cultivation in universities is no longer confined to textbook theories. Instead, it is adapting to the new employment and industry needs of human-machine collaboration through school-enterprise partnerships, interdisciplinary integration, and the cultivation of humanistic literacy. Sun Lingyun, Vice Dean and Professor at the School of Artificial Intelligence, Zhejiang University, said: "A major change is that we believe cutting-edge knowledge is no longer found only in textbooks or courses. This frontier knowledge is likely in the industry. In Hangzhou, almost all of our 'Six Little Dragons' companies have one-on-one partnerships with Zhejiang University courses. For example, for a historical question, it's very likely that an AI company will work with our history teachers to explore how to conduct historical research from an AI perspective."
Chen Chaoqun from Tsinghua University added: "Artificial intelligence is a new ecosystem that requires deep integration between teaching and research institutions and the corporate world, with continuous iteration. This means our talent cultivation methods must undergo new transformations and we must establish new platforms with enterprises. Students need to both learn and improve their skills, while the problems raised by companies should be seamlessly integrated into the school, prompting school research groups and students to study new issues and find new solutions." Cultivating a mindset for the AI era is equally important. Renmin University of China has launched courses on AI thinking, fostering a mindset that uses AI for good and as a tool to serve people. Bu Chao, Deputy Director of the Student Employment and Entrepreneurship Guidance Center at Renmin University, emphasized: "This includes concepts like AI for social good, AI ethics, how to use AI tools scientifically and safely, and the humanistic values we hold dear. I believe this set of principles will never become outdated."
