Data released by the National Bureau of Statistics on July 30 shows that the value added of China's "new economy" sectors, comprising new industries, new business formats, and new business models, reached 257,869 billion yuan in 2025. This represents a year-on-year increase of 6.2% at current prices, outpacing the overall GDP growth rate at current prices by 2.2 percentage points.
This sector's contribution to the total economy rose to 18.39% of GDP, up 0.38 percentage points from the previous year. Breaking down the figures by industry, the primary sector within the new economy posted a value added of 9,865 billion yuan, growing 4% annually and accounting for 3.8% of the total. The secondary sector recorded 106,304 billion yuan, a 5.8% increase, representing 41.2% of the new economy. The tertiary sector contributed 141,700 billion yuan, rising 6.6% and making up 55% of the total.
The "new economy" is defined as a collection of economic activities centered on new industries, new business formats, and new business models. The value added of these sectors measures the total value created by all resident units in a country or region through their involvement in new economy production activities over a specific period.
