On Tuesday, VOYAH AUTO Chairman Lu Fang shared his perspective on the evolving multipurpose vehicle (MPV) segment, responding to recent industry commentary about a pivotal market transition.
Lu Fang agreed with the "Nokia versus iPhone" analogy for the sector but clarified that the inflection point actually occurred back in 2022, not now. He noted that if the Voyah Dreamer represented the MPV's first leap from the Nokia era to the iPhone era four years ago, then the latest Dreamer 9 is positioned as the next-generation iPhone 20.
According to Lu, the new model is built entirely around a Level 3 autonomous driving architecture, featuring eight-layer redundancy and 40 perception sensors, making it the world's first MPV with a native L3 architecture. He emphasized that any MPV lacking a robust L3-ready framework today has no basis for claiming superiority in the market.
This discussion follows remarks from Li Auto CEO Li Xiang, who recently asserted that the MPV segment is at a critical juncture. Li Xiang explained that in the internal combustion engine era, the engine placement at the front compromised chassis space, often relegating MPVs to inferior suspension systems. Consequently, neither drivers nor passengers received optimal comfort and handling.
Li Xiang argued that the shift toward pure electric architectures now enables manufacturers to address these shortcomings effectively, a point validated by customer feedback on the Li MEGA. He stressed that true product evolution stems from innovative definitions and new technology applications rather than mere slogans, noting that the iPhone revolutionized Nokia's dominance through substantive design and technological breakthroughs, not just ambitious announcements.
