Tech Stock Rebound Fails to Lift Bitcoin as Rates and Oil Prices Keep Sentiment Subdued

Stock News10-20 08:43

According to Woofun AI, US tech stocks staged a rebound last week after a sharp selloff, but Bitcoin (BTC) posted only limited gains, hovering around $82,000, creating a notable divergence between the two markets. As of 8:16 AM on the 20th, Bitcoin (BTC) was trading at 110.3 million Korean won on South Korean digital asset exchange Upbit, down 0.20% from 9 AM the previous day. On global exchange Binance, Bitcoin rose 0.29% to $81,958. At the same time, Ethereum (ETH) gained 0.63% to $2,404.59, while Ripple (XRP) rose 0.55% to $1.3.

Woofun AI data showed that approximately $37.4 million (about 49.8 billion Korean won) worth of Bitcoin positions were liquidated over the past 24 hours, with about 71.7% being short positions. Across the entire digital asset market, roughly $191.79 million (about 268.5 billion Korean won) in positions were liquidated. Bitcoin had briefly climbed to $83,000 before falling back to around $82,000. Even with the US tech stock rebound, Bitcoin failed to sustain any meaningful upward momentum.

US equities rebounded led by semiconductor and artificial intelligence-related stocks, with the Nasdaq index rising 0.85% about 30 minutes after the market opened. Semiconductor stocks that had fallen sharply last week, including Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ: MU), Intel Corp (NASDAQ: INTC), SanDisk, and Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ: AMD), posted gains ranging from 4% to 7%. The S&P 500 also rose 0.4%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.25%. Although capital flowed into tech stocks, the major indices showed divergent performance. The Nasdaq 100 had risen 1.2% the previous day, ending its worst weekly decline since the April 2025 tariff shock. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index also gained 1.6%, snapping an eight-session losing streak.

Despite the stock market rebound, concerns about tightening in the bond market persisted. The US 10-year Treasury yield rose 7 basis points the previous day to 5.14%. This was mainly driven by reduced demand for safe-haven assets amid the tech stock recovery, combined with renewed expectations that the Federal Reserve may raise rates further next year. International oil prices also remained elevated. Due to ongoing supply issues in the Middle East, Brent crude prices exceeded $109 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose to around $103. Inflationary pressure from higher oil prices could intensify market concerns about the Fed tightening monetary policy, putting further pressure on risk asset markets.

Earnings reports from several prominent tech companies due this week are also a market focus. Through the results of Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ: META) and Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA), investors hope to gauge whether investments in artificial intelligence are actually translating into profit growth. Given that the recent scale of AI infrastructure investment and corporate financing pressures are considered the main causes of the tech stock decline, the earnings results could further amplify market volatility. Gennadiy Goldberg, head of US rates strategy at TD Securities, said: "Because of the recent back-and-forth in the market, investor positioning remains unstable. Many investors are reluctant to participate in the market, which is making daily price swings increasingly larger."

The Fear and Greed Index stood at 59 points on the day, indicating a state of greed, up from 53 points the previous day. The closer the index is to 0, the greater the selling pressure; the closer to 100, the stronger the buying interest.
