Yanji City Launches Campaign to Promote Frugality and Combat Food Waste

Deep News04-08 15:50

To uphold the traditional Chinese virtue of diligence and thrift and effectively curb food waste, the Market Supervision Administration of Yanji City in Jilin Province has been conducting a themed campaign since the beginning of the year. The campaign, titled "Oppose Waste, Advocate Savings," focuses on food establishments within its jurisdiction, combining public education with special inspections to encourage residents to adopt civilized dining practices. Enforcement officers have visited various restaurants, distributing initiative letters for the "Clean Plate Campaign" and promotional materials advocating "Civilized Dining and Appropriate Ordering." They have also urged businesses to display "Clean Plate Campaign" pledge boards in prominent locations to foster a strong social atmosphere of mindful consumption. Additionally, staff provided on-site guidance to restaurant employees, advising them to suggest appropriate portion sizes based on the number of diners and to offer smaller or half-portioned dishes. Consumers are encouraged to order according to their needs and take leftovers home. The campaign also promotes the use of serving spoons and chopsticks to advocate for hygienic and modest dining habits. The initiative aims to strengthen supervision against food waste, safeguard food security, and integrate thrift into daily dining practices. So far, 4,580 catering businesses have voluntarily joined the effort. Moving forward, the Yanji Market Supervision Administration will incorporate anti-waste measures into routine oversight, increasing inspections and public awareness efforts. Businesses will be urged to fulfill their responsibilities, with timely corrections for wasteful practices, using "small dining tables" to promote "greater civility" and making the "Clean Plate Campaign" a widely embraced social norm.
