Hangzhou Launches 2026 Street Art Festival, Making 'Beauty Around Every Corner' a Daily Reality

The "Art for Beauty, Fondest Memories of Hangzhou" 2026 Hangzhou Street Art Festival opened on the evening of May 16 in the city's Qinghefang Historical Block. The event featured a rotating program of Yue Opera, traditional Chinese music, street dance, and an immersive interactive avant-garde drama titled "Spring Stories on Imperial Street." Eight fixed performance points and one mobile point transformed the historical district into a panoramic art stage, allowing citizens and tourists to encounter street art at any moment.

The Qinghefang Historical Block is a significant site of the ancient capital of the Wuyue Kingdom from the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. The cultural spirit of Wuyue, inheriting Tang dynasty styles and inspiring the elegance of the Song dynasty, with its principles of "protecting the territory and people" and "peaceful reunification," along with its cultural ethos of "revering literature and art while embracing inclusivity," continues to flow through this land.

That evening, "Spring Stories on Imperial Street" was performed interactively in front of the "Hangzhou Nine Walls." Old objects embedded in the walls, such as bicycles, coal stoves, and old staircases, served as narrative clues, while digital light projections depicted the everyday lives of local residents.

This festival embodies the concept of public art, with some of the drama's "cast" coming from the citizenry. During the performance, actors emerged from the crowd, and the audience moved through the alleys, with every passerby becoming part of the "play."

Notably, before the festival, organizers recruited citizens with talents to participate interactively. Opera enthusiasts and magic performers actively joined, integrating their skills into the storyline. This fusion of art and life serves as a testament to the enhancement and upgrading of Hangzhou's "new public art" and "art for beauty" initiatives.

"For six years, the street art festival has continuously evolved, naturally integrating into urban life and gradually becoming an eagerly anticipated annual event for Hangzhou's residents," said Zhou Chenfei, Secretary-General of the Hangzhou Performing Arts Association.

This festival is a microcosm of Zhejiang's "Art for Beauty" project, launched in September 2022, which aims to bring art out of theater walls and into public urban and rural spaces. Data shows that over the past three years, Zhejiang has hosted more than 550,000 "Art for Beauty" performances, established over 3,000 regular performance points, and engaged over 150 million participants online and offline, achieving full coverage across all 11 prefecture-level cities in the province.

As a pilot city, Hangzhou has built three pillars: street art, nighttime performances, and rural cultural tourism. Initiatives like the "blind box" concerts at Xizi Covered Bridge by West Lake, the "Village K" competitions in Deqing's Xinshi Ancient Town, and public art residency creations in Tonglu's Meirong Village have turned the slogan "beauty around every corner" from a catchphrase into daily life.

In September 2025, seven departments, including the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, jointly issued the "Work Plan for 'Art for Beauty in Rural Areas' (2025-2027)," promoting the institutional advancement of empowering rural areas through art and fostering common prosperity through culture.

From the bluestone paths of Qinghefang to cultural corners across Zhejiang's urban and rural landscapes, the core principle of "Art for Beauty" remains unchanged: to ensure art is no longer confined behind high walls but becomes a daily experience accessible and participatory for all. It transforms the public from mere cultural recipients into cultural creators, achieving spiritual common prosperity through aesthetic experiences.

As a young musician participating in the street performances said, "Because of the music, and because of Hangzhou's inclusiveness, we feel at home in this city."
