Market Anticipates Tech Earnings as Nasdaq Edges Lower Amid Geopolitical Tension

International oil prices experienced a significant surge today, driven by the multifaceted impact of Middle Eastern conflicts and the war in Ukraine on energy markets, coupled with persistently low strategic energy reserves.

The price of the international benchmark Brent crude oil futures has climbed more than $20 from its low point in early July. This rapid rebound, bringing prices close to the $100 per barrel threshold, has already pushed the national average price for gasoline at U.S. pumps above $4 per gallon, reigniting market concerns about a resurgence in inflation.

These prevailing risk factors have dampened risk appetite among equity investors. Following a substantial rally in the semiconductor sector yesterday, the Nasdaq Composite Index saw a modest decline in today's session. Market attention is now firmly fixed on the earnings reports from major technology companies scheduled for release after the market close this evening, with Alphabet, the parent company of Google, Tesla Motors, and IBM set to announce their quarterly results.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note approached 4.65%. Investors are currently pricing in a nearly 25% probability of an interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve at its policy meeting next Wednesday, a significant increase from the roughly 16% expectation at the start of this week.
