A representative from Google DeepMind's development team, Omar Sanseviero, posted a message on a social media platform, addressing individuals associated with the Qwen project. He stated that if they are seeking a new environment to build outstanding models and contribute to the open-source model ecosystem, they should make contact. He mentioned that the team's roadmap includes many exciting developments and that there is significant work ahead.
This follows the recent announcement by Lin Junyang, the core lead of the Tongyi Qianwen (Qwen) project, of his departure from the initiative, which has sparked widespread speculation about his next career move. Subsequently, other key contributors to the Qwen project, including Yu Bowen, head of post-training; Hui Binyuan, head of Qwen Code; and Li Kaixin, a core contributor to Qwen3.5, VL, and Coder, also announced their exits.
Earlier today, Alibaba Group CEO Wu Yongming responded to Lin Junyang's resignation via an internal email, confirming that his departure had been approved. Omar Sanseviero's public message is widely interpreted as an attempt to recruit Lin Junyang and other former Qwen team members to join Google.
