JD.com has prioritized fostering harmonious labor relations as a cornerstone of its high-quality development strategy. The company actively explores an "Internet+" democratic management model, focusing on three key pathways: institutional safeguards, growth empowerment, and employee participation—transforming jobs into fulfilling careers for its workforce.
Since convening its first Employee Representative Congress in 2021, JD.com has systematically standardized this platform, enabling employees to engage in corporate decision-making. To accommodate its geographically dispersed and diverse workforce, JD.com innovatively blends online and offline channels for proposal submissions, opinion-sharing, live-streamed meetings, and transparent information disclosure—ensuring every representative’s voice is effectively heard.
"Through the Congress, employees gain visibility into corporate strategy while directly influencing policies on compensation, career development, and workplace safety," emphasized a JD.com union representative. "This transforms them into genuine stakeholders in governance and value-sharing."
On institutional safeguards, JD.com pioneered formal labor contracts and comprehensive social insurance (including pension, medical, unemployment, housing fund, and injury coverage) for delivery personnel. It guarantees "three 100%’s" for full-time riders: 100% signed contracts, 100% social insurance enrollment, and 100% access to employee benefits. To date, over 150,000 riders have been covered, securing their healthcare, retirement, and housing needs. "When labor rights are respected and protections implemented, frontline workers gain true peace of mind," the representative noted.
JD.com also institutionalized regular "Employee Feedback Sessions," addressing concerns about services, policies, and work environments through structured dialogues. From warehouse staff to R&D engineers, every employee—regardless of role—can voice ideas that directly shape workplace improvements.
In May 2023, JD.com broke ground on "JD Youth City," a 300,000-square-meter complex opposite its Beijing headquarters. The development, featuring move-in-ready apartments, kindergartens, fitness centers, and retail spaces, incorporated extensive employee feedback during planning—from commercial layouts to interior designs.
Geographical barriers were further dismantled through JD.com’s nationwide collective bargaining mechanism, empowering even remote employees—like those in Mohe (China’s northernmost city at -40°C winters)—to drive operational changes. After a local station manager raised issues about electric trikes in extreme cold, heated four-wheel vehicles were deployed across Mohe within a month.
From participatory governance to holistic welfare, JD.com’s digital-enabled democratic model has cultivated stable labor relations while ensuring dignity, growth opportunities, and meaningful engagement for every employee.
