Fixed-Price Gold Jewelry Underweight with Per-Gram Costs Exceeding 2,000 Yuan

Deep News11:02

Multiple consumers have recently reported issues with popular "fixed-price" gold jewelry, alleging hidden pitfalls in the sales process. Customers noted that gold stores heavily promote these items as featuring exquisite craftsmanship and diamond accents, but their prices are significantly higher than standard weight-based gold jewelry. Investigations reveal that some merchants obscure product weight during sales and use persuasive tactics, with sales staff aggressively promoting benefits like "easy style exchanges" to attract buyers. However, when customers attempt to exchange items, they are often required to trade for larger, more expensive pieces, leading many to feel misled. Legal experts advise consumers to always verify weight, pricing methods, and exchange policies to avoid unclear transactions.

One consumer from Chongqing shared her experience of purchasing a gold accessory for 9,108 yuan on March 7, 2026, at a well-known jewelry brand store. The salesperson strongly recommended a fixed-price product, verbally indicating it weighed around 3.7 grams. After purchase, she discovered the actual weight labeled was only 3.2 grams. With the market gold price at approximately 1,500 yuan per gram that day, the effective price she paid reached 2,846 yuan per gram—nearly double the market rate. When she returned to the store seeking a refund, staff refused, stating that high-value gold items cannot be returned and can only be exchanged for new pieces priced at least 15% higher, a condition not mentioned at the time of purchase.

During visits to a large shopping mall in Nanjing's Jianye District, reporters observed that fixed-price gold items were prominently displayed in central positions across all brands. For example, one brand’s diamond-accented gold pendant was priced at 23,990 yuan for 8.6 grams, resulting in a per-gram cost of nearly 2,800 yuan. In contrast, the standard gold price at weight-based counters nearby was just over 1,400 yuan per gram, making the fixed-price option almost twice as expensive.
