SpaceX Proposes 10 GW Texas Solar Plant, Advancing Musk's Vision for Space-Based Power

SpaceX plans to construct a large-scale solar manufacturing facility with a capacity of 10 gigawatts near Austin. This move represents a crucial step in Elon Musk's grand vision to power space-based artificial intelligence data centers. Building permit application documents indicate that the proposed two-story plant in Bastrop, Texas, is designed to produce 5 gigawatts of solar cells per floor. This initiative appears to be part of a broader strategy for SpaceX. The company's initial public offering (IPO) filing submitted on Wednesday revealed plans to double the size of its existing Bastrop facility this year, expanding production for both solar cells and new Starlink products.

In January at the World Economic Forum, Musk stated that he views solar power as the solution to the energy constraints facing AI infrastructure development. He announced an ambitious goal: within the next three years, both Tesla and SpaceX aim to each establish annual solar manufacturing capacity of 100 gigawatts in the United States. This scale of production would significantly surpass the current domestic manufacturing output in the U.S.

Reports in February indicated that Tesla is evaluating multiple sites across the country to commence solar cell production. A report released Thursday by a U.S. clean energy association shows that current annual U.S. solar module manufacturing capacity exceeds 60 gigawatts. However, the majority of these modules incorporate silicon cells produced overseas, with only three domestic silicon cell factories currently operational.

First Solar (FSLR.US) is the largest U.S. photovoltaic manufacturer, with its thin-film technology products representing approximately 14 gigawatts of annual domestic capacity. Noah Cowles, Director of Solar Production at SpaceX, recently posted on LinkedIn that the company is building "one of the world's most advanced solar cell factories" in Bastrop, Texas. The post also mentioned that SpaceX is hiring engineers for the facility.

Furthermore, Tesla has posted several solar manufacturing job openings for its facilities in Brookshire and the Houston area of Texas. The same location is also planned to host a Megapack energy storage battery production line. The planning for this factory coincides with Tesla's forecast of a significant increase in capital expenditures to over $25 billion this year. Tesla's Chief Financial Officer, Vaibhav Taneja, stated during an April investor call that the company has initiated procurement for solar manufacturing equipment.

It is reported that Musk recently met with senior U.S. government officials, hoping to advocate for the relaxation of relevant import restrictions, though the ultimate outcome remains unclear. This month, SpaceX is applying for an enterprise zone designation for its Bastrop site, which would qualify it for corresponding tax rebates upon approval. The area also hosts facilities for Musk's tunnel drilling company, The Boring Company, xAI infrastructure, and a range of employee support amenities.
