The latest developments regarding Lu Xiangdong, the former Vice President of China Mobile Group, while in prison have been revealed. He has received two sentence reductions, from an initial life sentence to 22 years of imprisonment, and then a further reduction of 5 months. This means he is scheduled for release in May 2039, by which time he will be 79 years old. However, what is truly staggering is the revelation that Lu Xiangdong was also implicated as having a mistress. This information was disclosed in the legal judgment documents related to Lu Xiangdong's case.
In fact, very few people are aware that when Lu Xiangdong faced legal trouble, both his wife and his mistress were implicated. Notably, his mistress received a sentence reduction even earlier than Lu and has been out of prison for approximately nine years now. Lu Xiangdong was investigated for suspected economic issues and resigned from his position in March 2012.
In 2013, Lu Xiangdong was convicted of accepting bribes totaling more than 25 million yuan and was sentenced to life imprisonment. Concurrently, his wife was also sentenced to three years in prison, with a five-year reprieve, for her involvement in the bribery scheme. Compared to the situation with his wife, the existence of Lu Xiangdong's mistress, a woman surnamed Sun, is likely unknown to many, and her legal punishment was more severe than that of Lu's wife.
After trial, it was established that between 2003 and October 2010, Lu Xiangdong's mistress, Sun, exploited his official position to seek benefits for others. She was involved in three separate bribery cases with Lu, with the total amount accepted reaching 20.96 million yuan, for which she was sentenced to six years in prison. However, it is reported that in September 2017, due to her reformed attitude, admission of guilt and remorse, compliance with laws and prison regulations, active participation in educational reform, and diligent work, Sun demonstrated genuine repentance and was granted a sentence reduction of eight months.
At that time, she had less than eight months left to serve, and as a result, her remaining sentence was commuted entirely, leading to her immediate release. Just half a month later, Lu Xiangdong received his first sentence reduction, having his life sentence commuted to 22 years of imprisonment. He received another reduction of five months in 2020.
In his heyday, Lu Xiangdong was a highly prominent young executive within the industry, wielding significant long-term authority over market operations, corporate partnerships, billing settlements, and mobile data services management. It is alleged that his mistress, Sun, was the head of an advertising company and had established a branch office leveraging Lu Xiangdong's influence. Numerous advertisers sought her recommendations and assistance, from which she received business commissions; these funds were subsequently identified as part of the bribes accepted by Lu Xiangdong.
