Rice Paddies Turned into Runway: Intangible Cultural Heritage Fashion Show in Baoshan's Fields

Deep News10-28

In the golden month of October, the rice paddies on the outskirts of Shanghai have entered their mature season, with heavy ears of rice waiting to be harvested.

On the afternoon of October 27, the "Wind Carries Rice Fragrance, Clothing Awaits Autumn Harvest" New Chinese-Style Autumn Harvest Theme Launch Event was held in Huahong Village, Luojing, Baoshan.

With the rice paddies as the runway, models appeared one after another in new Chinese-style attire, the gold threads of panjin embroidery and the beauty of traditional craftsmanship forming a poetic echo with the golden waves of rice, becoming a vivid practice of culture and art empowering rural areas and exploring the integrated development of culture, commerce, tourism, sports, exhibitions, and agriculture — the "six industries."

As one of the co-organizers of the event, in May of this year, the "Our Granary" café opened beside the rice paddies of Huahong Village.

A relevant person in charge introduced that bringing an intangible cultural heritage fashion show into the countryside is also a way to help rural revitalization. "Autumn is the season of harvest. Today's rural revitalization is not just about building houses well and running a café well. We hope to achieve win-win results with the villagers and develop together with the entire countryside."

"Now the rural landscape has undergone earth-shaking changes, and our environmental appearance can also retain people," sighed the Party branch secretary of Huahong Village. "Through our practice, we have found that art and the countryside go very well together. The wind blowing through the rice waves — that is art." He revealed that in the future the village will also have art spaces, tea rooms, light meal shops, and more. "In the past we were 'waiting for development,' now we are proactively 'seeking development.'"

The event organizers introduced that they hope through this event to actively explore a new model for the integrated development of the six industries — culture, commerce, tourism, sports, exhibitions, and agriculture — allowing high-quality culture and art to truly sink into the countryside and exploring more possibilities for the integration of rural spaces with culture and art. "This is not only a break in the boundaries of traditional fashion spaces, but also an upgrade in the energy level of Baoshan's rural cultural tourism."
