On May 5, 2026, IREN Ltd announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Mirantis in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $625 million (4.27 billion Chinese yuan) at the time of signing. Following the completion of the transaction, Mirantis will operate as an independent subsidiary, continuing to serve its existing customer base while also supporting the deployment of IREN's AI Cloud. The deal remains subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.
Mirantis is a seasoned player from the previous generation of cloud computing infrastructure. During the OpenStack era, the company was a significant participant, being a founding member and silver sponsor of the OpenStack Foundation. It has completed over 200 OpenStack deployments for enterprise and carrier-grade cloud infrastructures and ranks among the top five contributors in OpenStack history by commits or lines of code. The acquisition by IREN is aimed at leveraging this extensive experience for its AI Cloud initiatives.
Historically, IREN's strengths have lain in foundational resource capabilities. The company has highlighted its core advantages, which include securing power, constructing data centers, deploying GPUs, and bringing computational power online at scale. However, possessing GPUs does not equate to providing cloud services. To effectively sell to enterprise clients, capabilities in resource allocation, environment deployment, performance monitoring, fault resolution, technical support, and ongoing operations and maintenance are essential. IREN has explicitly stated that as its AI Cloud deployments expand, reliable provisioning, monitoring, and support are becoming increasingly critical, and Mirantis is expected to enhance these specific capabilities. This reflects a shift in AI infrastructure competition from simply "who has the hardware and power" to "who can deliver computing power stably to enterprises," an area where Mirantis's expertise fits perfectly.
From the perspective of Mirantis's own evolution, the company represents a key thread in cloud infrastructure development, transitioning from OpenStack to Kubernetes and now to AI Cloud. In 2019, Mirantis acquired the Docker Enterprise platform business, gaining the Docker Enterprise container platform, its team, and hundreds of enterprise customers. At that time, it announced plans to integrate Docker Enterprise with its Kubernetes technology to deliver a consistent experience across public cloud, hybrid cloud, edge, and on-premises infrastructures. IREN Ltd currently has a market capitalization of $16.42 billion.
