Animated Film "Ox Coming" Goes Viral, Boosting "Ox" Named A-Shares as Luoniushan Hits Daily Limit, Some Investors Visit Theaters to Show Support

Deep News08-17 10:30

On the morning of August 17, three A-share stocks with "ox" in their names showed strong performance. Luoniushan Co.,Ltd. hit its daily limit, Jinniu Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. rose over 6%, and Beijing Tongniu Information Technology Co., Ltd. gained nearly 4%.

This activity follows the unexpected surge in popularity of the Chinese animated film "Ox Coming," which gained traction due to its rough animation and absurd plot. According to Maoyan Movie's real-time data, as of 9:30 AM on August 17, the film's cumulative box office has reached 9.46 million yuan, with a predicted total box office exceeding 89 million yuan based on Maoyan Professional Edition data.

"Ox Coming" resonates with stock investors who see it as a symbol of their hopes for a "bull market" (a term often associated with "ox" in Chinese). This cultural phenomenon has spilled over into capital markets. On August 16, three of the top five trending stocks on Hithink RoyalFlush featured "ox" in their names, including Jinniu Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., Bull Group Co., Ltd., and Beijing Tongniu Information Technology Co., Ltd.

Analysts at CITIC Securities observe that the greatest daily wish of Chinese stock investors sums up to three words: "Niu Lai Ba" (Ox, come). Amid the market's ups and downs over recent years, these two words—"niu lai"—have carried immense expectations, anxiety, and frustration. The film requires no plot, production, or content; its name alone is enough to evoke deep resonance.

Some viewers interpret the film's characters "Ox Coming" and "Leopard Pull" along with the ending "A Big Dream" as metaphors for stock market trends. Dedicated investors have traveled to theaters to support the film, expressing a natural longing for "ox coming." Many see buying tickets as a way to "seek good luck." This is not a discussion about film quality, but a reflection of collective psychology.

Regarding the box office turnaround of "Ox Coming," Chen Guo, Deputy Director of the Research Institute and Chief Strategy Officer at Orient Securities, commented on social media: "People's inner needs are diverse. There is a need for aesthetics, but also for the grotesque. There is a need for respect, but also for contempt. This includes a need for serious sophistication and for rough relaxation. The same applies to the stock market."

"When sophistication is everywhere, roughness becomes a novelty. When AI is everywhere, 'no AI' stands out." Chen Guo believes this contrast is key to the unexpected success of "Ox Coming." He further noted: "Ox Coming is ox coming. A 'no AI' version of 'ox coming' is now playing and exceeding expectations, becoming a new trend."
