Stock News15:26

On August 18, China's A-share market saw mixed closes with notable divergence among the three major indices. The Shanghai Composite and STAR 50 edged higher, while the Shenzhen Component and ChiNext fell. The Beijing Stock Exchange 50 Index led the major benchmarks with a 2.67% jump. By the close, the Shanghai Composite inched up 0.19% to 3,990.30 points, while the Shenzhen Component slipped 0.56% to 14,622.50 points, and the ChiNext lost 0.93% to 3,705.56 points. The STAR 50 gained 0.11% to 1,790.87 points, and the Beijing Stock Exchange 50 rose 2.67% to 1,137.89 points.

The combined turnover on the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges reached approximately 2.4007 trillion yuan, up about 13.317 billion yuan from the previous session. Market breadth was negative, with 2,121 stocks advancing, 3,292 declining, and 81 hitting the daily limit up, while 6 fell to the limit down. Advancing stocks accounted for roughly 38% of the market.

Sector-wise, planting (+9.54%), agricultural product processing (+4.29%), fishery (+3.26%), oilfield services (+3.05%), and feed (+3.00%) led the gains. On the flip side, glass fiber (-2.30%), components (-2.03%), communication equipment (-1.35%), film and television theater chains, and energy metals recorded the steepest declines. Additionally, the year's most expensive new listing, Frequency Precision Laser (N Frequency), surged 516.44% to close at 1,152.00 yuan, up from its initial public offering price of 186.88 yuan.

What drove the divergence?

The notable index divergence was accompanied by turnover of roughly 2.4 trillion yuan, up 13.3 billion yuan from the previous day. The agricultural sector saw a broad-based surge, with planting, agricultural product processing, fishery, and feed stocks leading the charge. This rally was largely fueled by a JPMorgan warning that the next global food crisis could erupt as early as next year, exacerbated by potential disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and expectations of a severe El Ni帽o event.

Robot concept stocks also strengthened during the session. The 2026 World Robot Conference is set to take place in Beijing from August 19 to 23, and Unitree Technology is scheduled to debut on the STAR Market on August 19, having unveiled its new humanoid robot, "Superman," on August 17.

Oil and oilfield services stocks were active following the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration's release of the "15th Five-Year Plan for Oil and Natural Gas Development," coupled with ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Iran.

IT innovation and domestic operating system concepts rallied in the afternoon. The Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization issued its "15th Five-Year Plan for the Development of Software and Information Services" on August 11, targeting an industry scale of 4 trillion yuan by 2030 and the deployment of a 100,000-card-level intelligent computing cluster.

Hot sectors in focus

1. Agricultural planting: The planting industry surged 9.54%, ranking first among Shenwan sectors. Shennong Seed and Tianshan Bio hit the 20% daily limit, while Jinjian Rice and Zhongnongfa Seed posted two consecutive limit-ups, and Dabeinong also hit the limit-up. In the pork segment, Luoniushan recorded its second consecutive limit-up, and Tianshang Food hit the daily limit. The catalyst remains JPMorgan's warning that a global food crisis may be brewing and could erupt next year, with potential shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and a strong El Ni帽o possibly weakening crop yields and driving up food inflation.

2. Humanoid robots: Robot concept stocks strengthened on a volatile note, with Estun hitting the limit-up, Wolong Electric Drive climbing 7.40%, Zhongda Leader up 6.11%, Zhengyu Industrial posting three consecutive limit-ups, and Nanfang Precision also hitting the limit-up. The 2026 World Robot Conference, scheduled for August 19-23 in Beijing, and Unitree's upcoming STAR Market debut on August 19 with its new humanoid robot are the key drivers.

3. IT innovation/domestic operating systems: The IT innovation theme saw an intraday rally, with Wuhan Tianyu hitting the 20% limit-up, China Software and Kylin Trust both hitting limit-ups, Runhe Software jumping 7.33%, and Inspur Software and Guozi Software following suit. The Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization's August 11 plan, targeting a 4-trillion-yuan industry scale by 2030 and a 100,000-card intelligent computing cluster, provided the catalyst.

Declining sectors

Film and television theater chains, energy metals, components, and glass fiber led the declines. Beijing Culture neared the limit-down, while China Guangze, Alpha Group, Bona Film, Yongshan Lithium, Rongjie, and Boqian New Materials were among the notable losers. In the semiconductor space, Changxin Technology fell over 4%. These sectors had previously posted substantial gains, and the recent pullback highlights a clear pattern of sector rotation in the market.
