JD.com's Liu Qiangdong Expands Marine Business with New Qingdao Outpost

Deep News00:22

JD.com founder Liu Qiangdong has taken a new step in his marine industry strategy, this time establishing a presence in Qingdao.

According to business registration information, Shenzhen Tanhai Yacht Industry Development Co., Ltd. Qingdao Branch was recently established, with Fu Chuanyu as its principal. Its business scope includes ship leasing, yacht leasing, and rental services. Public information shows that its parent company, Shenzhen Tanhai Yacht Industry Development Co., Ltd., was established in February 2026 with a registered capital of $10.88 million. The actual controller is Liu Qiangdong, and the company serves as the core domestic operating vehicle for the Sea Expandary brand.

Analysis

Since the beginning of this year, Liu Qiangdong's concentrated moves in the yacht industry have drawn widespread market attention to this previously niche sector. On February 24th, the first working day after the Lunar New Year holiday, the Sea Expandary brand was officially launched. An initial investment of 5 billion yuan secured cooperation agreements with Shenzhen and Zhuhai. Plans include investing in a yacht manufacturing base in Zhuhai and establishing the brand's China headquarters in Shenzhen, covering the entire chain from R&D and manufacturing to operations.

One month later, in late March, Shenzhen Tanhai Yacht Industry Development Co., Ltd. signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Dalian municipal government. A Tanhai yacht manufacturing base and yacht operations project, with a total investment of 15 billion yuan, officially settled in Dalian.

In April, at the Sanya International Yacht Sub-Exhibition Zone of the 6th China International Consumer Products Expo, Liu Qiangdong, in digital avatar form, announced the landing of Tanhai Yacht in Sanya. The plan is to build a world-class sailboat manufacturing base and a yacht service center there.

The industry widely regards yachting as the last and most high-end "blank space" within China's major industrial categories, with over 90% of the global market share held by European and American companies. What Liu Qiangdong aims to do is precisely to "de-luxurify" yachts. He has previously stated publicly that he hopes to one day manufacture good yachts priced at the 100,000-yuan level, "making yachts accessible to thousands of households just like cars."

So, why was Qingdao "chosen"? From the latest layout, the Qingdao branch is positioned with leasing services at its core, forming clear functional synergy with the manufacturing ends in Zhuhai and Dalian. With its deep-rooted sailing culture, mature coastal tourism market, and well-developed port infrastructure, Qingdao holds a significant position in the national yacht tourism and cultural landscape. Local media analysis suggests that for Sea Expandary, Qingdao is a strategic pivot to leverage the mass consumer market. For Qingdao, the entry of a leading brand will also drive the transformation and upgrading of the local yacht tourism and culture sector, enriching coastal experience products.

The recently released "15th Five-Year Plan for Building a Strong Tourism Nation" proposes developing cruise and yacht tourism, promoting the construction of cruise ports and public yacht marinas, optimizing cruise routes and products, and steadily expanding yacht consumption pilot programs. Having gained a first-mover advantage, can Qingdao use this opportunity to unlock greater potential for its cultural tourism consumption?
