Jiangsu Liyang Addresses Plagiarism of Actor List from Baidu Wenku: Personnel and Units Involved Strictly Penalized

A document titled *"10,000 Common Chinese Names"* from Baidu Wenku was recently found copied verbatim into official lists across multiple sectors, sparking public outcry. Earlier reports revealed that the performer roster for the 2024 National Summer "Village Gala" demonstration event in Longfeng Village, Shangxing Town, Liyang City, Jiangsu, matched names and sequences from another Baidu Wenku document, *"Ten Thousand Names"*, suggesting bulk plagiarism.

On December 8, the Liyang Economic Development Zone Management Committee confirmed that due to tight deadlines for submitting the actor list—with some performers still unconfirmed—staff from a third-party agency handling the live broadcast directly copied names from Baidu Wenku. The oversight by the event’s on-site organizers led to incorrect performer details in the online program list. The committee’s disciplinary authority has since imposed strict penalties on those involved and the third-party company.

The event, held on August 25, 2024, was co-organized by the Liyang Economic Development Zone and the Cao Mountain Tourism Resort Office, under guidance from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s Public Service Department. The live broadcast, streamed via the National Public Cultural Cloud platform, featured a pre-released program list on its official WeChat account. Notably, multiple performer names and sequences aligned with entries in *"Ten Thousand Names"*.

For instance, the opening act *"Welcome Dance: Visit Liyang Often"* listed performers as "Yang Yiling, Lin Yarong, Li Jiawei, Chen Haoqian, Yang Yuting, Zhang Wangru, Li Yanzhi, Zhang Yamei, Guo Yuwei"—identical to the first nine names in *"Ten Thousand Names"*. Another act, *"Dance: Longfeng’s Poetic Charm"*, included names like "Xu Xiaowen, Zheng Zhongqin, Du Huyi," differing only in the last character from the Wenku document.

The WeChat post had noted, "Programs subject to on-site adjustments," but the preview and list were later deleted. Local reports indicated the event drew 11,000 on-site visitors and 250,000 online viewers.

The investigation found that the third-party agency, Nanjing New Force Cultural Development Co., hastily compiled the list under time constraints, copying names without verification. The committee has reprimanded Shi Jing, deputy director of the Social Affairs Office, and blacklisted the agency from future collaborations.
