The Chief Executive Officer of United Airlines, Scott Kirby, has stated that he previously "approached" American Airlines Group to discuss a potential merger. However, these discussions have now concluded after the target company declined to engage.
Kirby wrote in a statement on Monday, "A transaction of this magnitude simply cannot be accomplished without a willing partner." This marks the first time the United CEO has confirmed that the merger was considered.
Market reports earlier this month indicated Kirby's interest in pursuing a combination with American Airlines.
