A leading figure in the AI talent market has changed employers once again.
Noam Shazeer, one of the key technical architects behind the generative AI wave, has officially joined OpenAI. The company informed its internal staff of this development on Wednesday, June 17.
Shazeer later confirmed the move on X, stating, "I'm thrilled to announce I'm joining OpenAI and looking forward to working with the amazing team there."
Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) issued a statement saying, "We thank Noam for his significant contributions to Google over the years and wish him the best."
His Background and Significance
According to reports, Shazeer was a core author of the landmark 2017 paper "Attention Is All You Need." This paper introduced the Transformer architecture, which fundamentally provides the logic enabling AI to "predict the next most likely word."
This architecture serves as the technical foundation for ChatGPT, the GPT series of models, and marks the starting point of the broader generative AI explosion.
Shazeer's career path has been complex: he left Alphabet in 2021 to co-found the AI chatbot company Character.AI. In 2024, Alphabet reacquired him and his team in a deal worth $2.7 billion, integrating them into its AI division, DeepMind. Upon his return, he served as the technical lead for the Gemini model, overseeing the pre-training of the new generation model.
Now, he has departed once more, this time landing at OpenAI.
OpenAI's Motivation for the Hire
Reports indicate that at OpenAI, Shazeer will focus on two key areas: exploring new architectures for AI models and advancing the ongoing evolution of the existing Transformer architecture.
This focus is significant. Breakthroughs at the architectural level determine the potential ceiling for future generations of models, not merely incremental product updates.
The timing is also crucial. OpenAI is currently facing strong competition from Anthropic, with both companies preparing for highly anticipated IPOs. Securing a top researcher capable of driving progress at the foundational architecture level at this juncture carries implications beyond pure technology.
It is worth noting that during his previous tenure at Alphabet, Shazeer reportedly advocated for launching a chatbot product similar to ChatGPT, but the initiative did not proceed. OpenAI later successfully implemented this using the Transformer architecture. In a sense, this move represents a long-awaited alignment of paths.
Controversies and Context
Shazeer's record is not without controversy.
Character.AI, the company he co-founded, agreed to settle multiple lawsuits earlier this year. The lawsuits involved families alleging that the platform's AI chatbots were linked to teen suicides and mental health crises.
Furthermore, it was reported that during his time at Google DeepMind, Shazeer clashed with some colleagues over controversial statements made online. These included questioning the existence of transgender individuals and accusing employees focused on the situation in Gaza of harboring antisemitic tendencies.
