North-South Artistic Dialogue: Brushstrokes Depicting the Majestic Pass

Deep News12-09

On December 3rd, the "Ocean Rhyme, Frontier Sentiments – Guangdong Artists' Jiayuguan Sketch Exhibition" opened at the Jiayuguan Art Museum. Six renowned artists from the Lingnan region traveled across mountains and seas to gather at this historic pass, engaging in a spiritual dialogue between northern and southern artistic traditions through ink and color. Their works added profound cultural warmth and artistic brilliance to Jiayuguan's winter landscape.

The exhibition, jointly organized by the Municipal Publicity Department, the Culture and Tourism Bureau, and the Federation of Literary and Art Circles, featured over 70 outstanding pieces created by artists Jiang Zhiqiang, Xuan Xinming, Wang Xiuzhang, Lu Xiaogen, Wang Dongbiao, and Huang Guowu during their recent field sketches in Jiayuguan. The artworks spanned various mediums, including oil paintings, ink wash, and mixed media, meticulously capturing the grandeur of the Great Wall and the ancient fortress while poetically expressing the legacy of the Silk Road and frontier culture. These pieces reflected the artists' deep understanding and artistic reinterpretation of Jiayuguan's historical depth and cultural essence.

As the western starting point of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall, Jiayuguan stands at the intersection of Silk Road and Great Wall cultures, embodying the historical memory and civilizational footprints of the Chinese nation. The Guangdong artists' long-distance journey for creative inspiration not only demonstrated cross-regional artistic exchange but also represented an in-depth exploration and artistic representation of the city's cultural resources. Blending the delicate brushwork of Lingnan with the majestic scenery of the northern frontier, their works achieved a remarkable fusion of southern and northern aesthetics, offering local audiences a high-caliber artistic feast.

Unlike other first-time visitors, painter Wang Xiuzhang has repeatedly visited Jiayuguan, forming a profound connection with the land. During this trip, he donated his monumental 8m×3m oil painting "The First Majestic Pass Under Heaven" to the city's art museum for permanent collection. The other five artists also contributed their finest sketches. These works will become an integral part of Jiayuguan's cultural memory, enriching local art collections and inspiring regional creative vitality.

The exhibition exuded a vibrant artistic atmosphere, with audiences immersed in the imagery of the majestic pass and Silk Road sentiments, pausing to appreciate and photograph the works. More than just a visual feast, this event represented a cultural journey and a dialogue transcending time and space. Through art, it will continue to narrate Jiayuguan's stories, preserve the spirit of the Great Wall, and illuminate the legacy of the Silk Road.
