The US Senate has passed a comprehensive sanctions bill targeting Russia, authorizing punitive tariffs on major buyers of Russian oil and gas, including India, while extending sanctions on Iran. The bill, which was spearheaded by the late Senator Lindsey Graham, received bipartisan support and ultimately passed with 86 votes in favor and 11 against.
Senator Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, passed away shortly after returning from a visit to Ukraine last month. Before the vote, his sister, Darlene Graham, who assumed his Senate seat, stated, "This bill hits Putin where it hurts."
To secure the support of US President Donald Trump, the bill has been significantly scaled down from its original draft last year. The legislation still requires approval from the House of Representatives.
