Industrial Output in April: Accelerated Growth in Crude Oil and Power Production, Steady Natural Gas Expansion

According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, in April, the production of raw coal by industrial enterprises above designated size remained at a high level, while the growth rates for crude oil and power production accelerated, and natural gas output continued to expand steadily.

Regarding the production of raw coal, crude oil, and natural gas: Raw coal production maintained a high level. In April, industrial enterprises above designated size produced 390 million tons of raw coal, a year-on-year decrease of 1.0%, compared to a flat growth rate in March. The average daily output was 12.85 million tons. From January to April, the cumulative output of raw coal reached 1.58 billion tons, down 0.1% year-on-year.

Crude oil production growth accelerated. In April, crude oil output stood at 17.94 million tons, up 1.2% year-on-year, with the growth rate increasing by 1.0 percentage points compared to March. The average daily output was 598,000 tons. From January to April, cumulative crude oil production totaled 72.74 million tons, rising 1.3% year-on-year.

The decline in crude oil processing expanded. In April, crude oil processing volume was 54.65 million tons, down 5.8% year-on-year, with the rate of decline widening by 3.6 percentage points from March. The average daily processing volume was 1.822 million tons. From January to April, cumulative crude oil processing reached 238.95 million tons, a decrease of 0.5% year-on-year.

Natural gas production grew steadily. In April, natural gas output was 21.9 billion cubic meters, up 1.9% year-on-year, though the growth rate slowed by 1.1 percentage points compared to March. The average daily output was 730 million cubic meters. From January to April, cumulative natural gas production amounted to 90 billion cubic meters, an increase of 2.7% year-on-year.

Regarding power production: Power production by industrial enterprises above designated size accelerated. In April, power generation reached 744 billion kilowatt-hours, up 2.6% year-on-year, with the growth rate increasing by 1.2 percentage points from March. The average daily generation was 24.8 billion kilowatt-hours. From January to April, cumulative power generation totaled 3.1237 trillion kilowatt-hours, rising 3.3% year-on-year.

By energy source, in April, the growth rates for thermal and solar power generation slowed, while hydropower growth accelerated. The declines in nuclear and wind power narrowed. Specifically: Thermal power generation increased by 3.1% year-on-year, with the growth rate slowing by 1.1 percentage points compared to March. Hydropower generation grew by 12.2%, with the growth rate accelerating by 1.4 percentage points. Nuclear power generation decreased by 8.7%, with the rate of decline narrowing by 3.1 percentage points. Wind power generation fell by 5.0%, with the rate of decline narrowing by 12.3 percentage points. Solar power generation increased by 7.1%, with the growth rate slowing by 2.9 percentage points.
