Australia Threatens Legal Action Against Social Media Giants Over Alleged Youth Ban Violations

Australia threatened on Tuesday to initiate legal proceedings against major social media companies for allegedly disregarding a ban targeting users under the age of 16. The country's internet regulator disclosed that it is investigating several of the largest platforms over suspected non-compliance with this world-first measure. Three months after the ban took effect, the eSafety Commissioner stated that potential violations by Meta's Instagram and Facebook, Google's YouTube, and Snapchat are under scrutiny. Communications Minister Anika Wells indicated that the government is compiling evidence "so the eSafety Commissioner can initiate and win a case in the Federal Court." Speaking to reporters in Canberra, Wells remarked, "We spent the summer gathering evidence, which consists of stories about how children are circumventing the law—stories you have undoubtedly heard about..."
