The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has revealed the initial selection list for the first national demonstration bases for emerging industry development, with the Changsha High-Tech Zone making the cut. The zone's selected focus area is commercial aerospace, a field increasingly viewed as a strategic pathway for cultivating new productive forces. Hunan Xiangjiang New Area, which encompasses the Changsha High-Tech Zone, serves as the core hub of the nation's pilot program for low-altitude airspace reform, leveraging deep scientific innovation foundations and a complete industrial ecosystem that provides fertile ground for commercial space ventures.
In July, the Hunan Commercial Aerospace and Aviation Innovation Alliance was officially launched within the zone, bringing together 61 industry chain members as founding participants. This initiative pairs local backbone companies such as Tianyi Space and Hangsheng Satellite with research institutions including the Hunan Advanced Technology Research Institute and Central South University. The alliance marks a shift in Changsha's commercial aerospace sector from individual efforts toward a mutually beneficial ecosystem, fostering collective technological development, resource sharing, and industrial advancement. Crucially, this collaboration has broken down barriers between production, academia, research, and application, creating an efficient platform for coordinated innovation across the entire supply chain.
Changsha High-Tech Zone, the only region in central China with the capability for batch production of commercial satellites, has been deeply engaged in this industry for a decade. Through sustained development, the area now hosts over 400 aerospace and Beidou-related enterprises, accounting for more than 70% of Changsha's total. Among these, 32 companies have been recognized as national-level specialized and innovative "Little Giant" firms, and the industrial scale has surpassed the 30 billion yuan mark. Since the successful launch of the region's first commercial scientific experiment satellite, Xiaoxiang-1, in 2016, hundreds of satellites manufactured in Changsha have entered orbit, and a comprehensive supply chain covering complete satellite development, core components, and tracking, telemetry, and command applications is now well established.
Beyond complete satellite manufacturing, the zone has achieved impressive breakthroughs in commercial small satellites and essential parts. A notable example occurred in July when Tianyi Space launched two satellites into orbit within just two days, bringing its cumulative total to 41 satellites delivered to their designated orbits. The company's independently developed commercial synthetic aperture radar satellites, such as Haise-1 and Chaohu-1, have filled a domestic gap in commercial remote sensing, providing high-resolution data services for applications like maritime monitoring and disaster early warning. In the realm of reaction wheels, critical components often referred to as the "heart" of satellites, Lanyue Electromechanical, also based in the high-tech zone, has performed exceptionally well. The company has delivered more than 3,200 attitude and orbit control system units and supports over 320 satellites currently in orbit. During a recent batch launch for the Qianfan constellation project, Lanyue Electromechanical delivered dozens of reaction wheels in one shipment, setting a domestic record for the largest single-batch delivery in commercial space history.
Meanwhile, Hangsheng Satellite, which originated from a research team at the National University of Defense Technology, has developed and launched 15 satellites since its founding in 2015, spanning scientific research, remote sensing, and communication missions. With the longest in-orbit operation exceeding 11 years, the company's technology has proven its maturity and reliability under prolonged space conditions. Additionally, national aerospace projects including the Chang'e lunar exploration missions, the Tianwen-1 Mars exploration, and the Shenzhou crewed spaceflight program have all benefited from technical contributions and component support provided by enterprises within the Changsha High-Tech Zone.
