With the official start of Urumqi’s "Snow Break," sports venues and schools across the city have joined forces to offer free sports experiences, public training sessions, and winter-themed study activities. These initiatives encourage young people to unleash their energy at outdoor snowfields and enjoy indoor sports, sparking a winter sports craze.
Meanwhile, major parks like the Urumqi Botanical Garden and Hongshan Park have revitalized their spaces by creating ice rinks and snow play zones. The Urumqi Botanical Garden’s "Ice and Snow World" has begun trial operations, with more winter projects under rapid construction to provide diverse leisure options for residents and visitors, making the "Snow Break" more exciting.
On December 3, at the Economic Development Zone’s Cultural and Sports Center, children learned basketball dribbling techniques under coaches’ guidance. The same day, they experienced the joy of basketball through a mix of games and training. At the Urumqi Dome Sports Experience Hall, kids warmed up with a jog before activities. Over at the Urumqi Olympic Sports Center’s public fitness hall, children practiced fencing techniques, badminton serves, and archery skills.
While many kids headed outdoors for skiing and snow sports, others explored indoor snow venues for a different kind of winter fun. On December 2, at an indoor ski center in Qiyi Sunshine 100 Plaza, coaches helped children gear up for skiing. Youngsters practiced snowboard jumps on ski simulators, while others enjoyed ice skating at a rink in Youhao·City Outlets.
The Urumqi Botanical Garden has transformed into a whimsical "Snow Paradise," where children sled down slopes, greet adorable alpacas, and play freely in the snow. As winter sets in, parks across the city are repurposing sports fields and lakes into ice rinks and snow play areas. The Urumqi Botanical Garden’s "Ice and Snow World" is now open for trial, with similar projects underway at Hongshan Park and Midong District’s Cultural and Sports Park.
