Chongyang Festival in the Lanes: Old Neighbors Gather to Unlock a Unique Kind of Elderly Care

Deep News10-18

On the morning of October 16, the courtyard at No. 272 Wuxing Road in Xuhui District was warm and lively, as nearly sixty community seniors gathered together. The Wutong Block Party Branch of Tianping Subdistrict integrated resources from multiple parties and carefully arranged a rich array of activities including painting creation, exclusive portrait photography, and warm tea breaks, allowing everyone to immersively experience the Chongyang atmosphere and celebrate a cozy festival.

The event linked several caring merchants in the area to pool efforts in honoring the elderly and spreading warmth. The caring restaurant Honey Grass Toast Brunch Shop proactively provided the event venue, pastries, and tea, Xiamen International Bank prepared Chinese herbal medicine painting material kits, and volunteers from the 66 Wutong Courtyard barbershop were stationed on-site to provide free haircut services for elderly residents. Merchants also took on the role of professional photographers, capturing exclusive portrait photos for the seniors and preserving beautiful Chongyang moments for everyone, conveying community warmth through concrete actions.

A person in charge of a caring merchant said: "Through portrait photography, self-portrait creation, and other forms, this event preserves the beautiful elegance of the seniors in their later years." At the free haircut service, 85-year-old Grandma Zhang admitted that she rarely had the opportunity to take formal portraits on ordinary days. This time, the community thoughtfully arranged everything and provided considerate service, along with holiday pastries and warm benefits. The meticulous care made her feel especially warm, and she truly experienced the warmth of the community as a big family.

The Chongyang event made the participating elderly very happy. Meanwhile, the lane at No. 492 Yongjia Road was also filled with laughter and joy. The "Baoyile" volunteer team created a nostalgic and playful garden party, bringing traditional lane games full of era memories into the community. Classic activities such as ring toss, sandbag throwing, and marble picking were held one after another, attracting many seniors to participate enthusiastically. The elderly sat around competing and enjoying fun games, rediscovering childhood memories in a relaxed and joyful atmosphere, and immersively feeling the lively mood of the Chongyang Festival.

After the garden party activities, volunteers thoughtfully prepared a hearty Chongyang feast, with steaming hot pork chop noodles, oil-exploded shrimp, and chili sauce paired with soft and sweet Chongyang cakes. Authentic home-style food added a rich warmth of everyday life to the entire Chongyang event, allowing seniors in the area to feel reunion and joy through delicious food and celebrate a warm Chongyang.
