Shortly after Elon Musk's SpaceX made its debut on the Nasdaq, hailed as the "largest IPO in human history," a Chinese commercial aerospace company in Changchun, Jilin, quietly announced the completion of a nearly 5 billion yuan equity financing round.
This company is the trailblazer of China's commercial space sector: Chang Guang Satellite Technology Co., Ltd. Since its establishment in 2014, starting with the launch of four satellites on a single rocket, the company has steadily advanced the construction of the "Jilin-1" satellite constellation. Through a full-industry-chain layout, it has spurred the coordinated development of over a thousand upstream and downstream enterprises, showcasing the immense potential for high-quality development in China's commercial space industry.
From Four Satellites to Forty-One on a Single Launch
Changchun, Jilin, is not only a traditional industrial base in China but also the birthplace of a "space eye." As a pioneer in China's commercial space sector, Chang Guang Satellite began its journey in 2015 with a launch of four satellites on one rocket. By 2023, it set a new domestic record by launching 41 satellites on a single rocket, creating the world's largest sub-meter resolution commercial remote sensing satellite constellation: "Jilin-1."
Recently, the company has been achieving a series of successes. On April 14th, the Lijian-1 Y12 carrier rocket successfully launched eight satellites, marking the 35th launch for the "Jilin-1" project. On April 24th, a satellite internet technology test satellite developed by Chang Guang Satellite was launched aboard a Long March-2D rocket, successfully validating key technologies such as direct smartphone-to-satellite connectivity.
Behind this string of impressive achievements lies Chang Guang Satellite's passionate dedication to breaking new ground in space, representing a saga of striving for high-quality development within China's commercial aerospace industry.
For decades prior to 2014, overseas suppliers dominated 75% of China's market for satellite data with resolutions better than 2.5 meters, while the market for sub-meter high-resolution imagery was 100% monopolized by foreign firms. Following the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, China lacked its own high-resolution data sources, forcing remote sensing experts to seek help from international counterparts. There were even instances where multiple domestic departments purchased the same remote sensing data from foreign giants simultaneously.
In 2010, with State Council approval, the major national project for a high-resolution earth observation system was fully launched. In December 2014, in the northern city of Changchun, Chang Guang Satellite was founded as China's first full-industry-chain commercial remote sensing satellite enterprise. A group of researchers with space dreams stepped out of their labs and blazed a new trail for China.
On October 7, 2015, at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, a Long March-2D carrier rocket roared into the sky, precisely delivering the first four "Jilin-1" satellites into their planned orbits. This was a milestone moment for China's commercial space sector—the country's first independently developed commercial high-resolution remote sensing satellite successfully entered orbit. On this day, the curtain officially rose on China's commercial space era.
The engineers at Chang Guang Satellite tackled numerous technical challenges related to miniaturizing, lightening, and reducing the cost of optical payloads. They transformed high-resolution remote sensing satellites, once "high-end luxury items" in the aerospace field costing hundreds of millions of yuan, into "industrial products" capable of mass production and large-scale constellation deployment.
According to the company's board secretary, through 30 successful launches, Chang Guang Satellite has sent a total of 161 "Jilin-1" remote sensing satellites into space, establishing the world's largest sub-meter commercial remote sensing satellite constellation. Leveraging its vast, high-quality remote sensing data, the company's services now cover agriculture, forestry, water resources, environmental protection, finance, and many other sectors, providing high-quality remote sensing information support across industries.
Chang Guang Satellite is just one representative within China's commercial space domain. Driven by its progress and with continuous advancements in batch production technology, Chinese companies, led by Chang Guang Satellite, have reduced the price of remote sensing data with comparable resolution to one-tenth of its original level in less than a decade.
Building a Full-Industry-Chain Commercial Space System
In fact, the rapid development of Chang Guang Satellite has inspired more individuals and enterprises to join the vast endeavor of commercial space, forming a significant "Chinese force" within the global remote sensing field.
Based on the massive "Jilin-1" remote sensing data, Chang Guang Satellite currently provides over 150 precision services across 14 sectors including agriculture, forestry, water resources, environmental protection, transportation, finance, natural resources, and urban development. It has delivered high-quality remote sensing information services to more than 170 countries and regions. This effort has gradually fostered an industrial cluster encompassing over a thousand upstream and downstream enterprises. The aerospace information industry is taking shape, generating substantial social and economic benefits.
The support from Jilin Province for the commercial space industry's development is also significant. As early as 2013, Jilin Province issued the "Opinions on Supporting the Development of the Remote Sensing Satellite and Application Industry," listing remote sensing satellites as a major provincial construction project. Incubated by the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chang Guang Satellite was established under the leadership of the Jilin Provincial Government, with funding from the provincial government, CIOMP, private capital, and technical core personnel.
As one of the earlier regions in China to establish commercial remote sensing satellite companies, Jilin Province is also a pioneer and leader in the country's commercial space sector. In recent years, centered on the "Jilin-1" satellites, Jilin has built a complete industrial chain for satellites and aerospace information. This has formed a relatively comprehensive aerospace industry ecosystem supported by universities and research institutes, led by Chang Guang Satellite, and involving numerous enterprises.
This industrial system covers all stages, including satellite component supply, processing, whole-satellite development, satellite measurement and control, data reception and processing, and application product development. It possesses integrated capabilities from satellite manufacturing to remote sensing information services, providing efficient, high-quality aerospace information services for the nation and society.
Regarding the recent completion of the nearly 5 billion yuan equity financing, Chang Guang Satellite stated that the raised funds will be precisely directed towards three core areas: first, accelerating the construction of batch satellite production capacity to enhance large-scale manufacturing efficiency; second, continuing to advance the "Jilin-1" satellite constellation deployment to solidify high-resolution data acquisition capabilities; and third, deepening the development of remote sensing data applications and expanding multi-industry, scenario-specific solutions.
The successful closing of this funding round will vigorously promote the transition of remote sensing applications from broad coverage to deep implementation. It will accelerate the integration of the value chain from "data acquisition" to "intelligent processing" to "industry empowerment," laying a solid foundation for deeply constructing a closed-loop commercial space industry.
The board secretary added that in the future, Chang Guang Satellite will leverage the optoelectronic industry layout of Jilin Province and Changchun City, continuously amplify its role as a leading chain enterprise, and drive the industrial cluster to grow larger and stronger.
From a single satellite to a constellation, from one company to an entire industrial chain, Chang Guang Satellite is using commercial space as a breakthrough point. It is propelling Jilin's optoelectronic industry from isolated breakthroughs to clustered development, injecting new commercial space momentum into the transformation and upgrading of the traditional industrial base in Northeast China.
