During a media dialogue following the launch event for the GX model, He Xiaopeng, Chairman and CEO of XPeng, along with Liu Xianming, Head of the General Intelligence Center, and Wu Anfei, General Manager of the Product Matrix, addressed questions from the press.
When asked whether XPeng, which adopts a pure vision-based autonomous driving route, feels pressure given the increasing proportion of vehicles priced above 150,000 yuan equipped with lidar, He Xiaopeng responded, "We feel no pressure. Lidar is a good technology, but I believe it is no longer necessary in the automotive field. Therefore, XPeng remains very firm in our approach. However, it is still needed in many other industries; this is my view."
Liu Xianming, Head of XPeng's General Intelligence Center, added that whether lidar is necessary depends on a company's technological stack, and there is no absolute answer. For users, the core of autonomous driving lies in the actual user experience and effectiveness, not the sensor configuration. XPeng adheres to a lidar-free route, with the core focus on the actual performance of its second-generation VLA system. He stated that even under extreme weather, nighttime, or complex driving conditions, good results can be achieved through high computing power, large models, and high-density sensors.
