STMicroelectronics to Expand French Crolles Facility Amid Surging AI Data Center Demand for Silicon Photonics

Deep News06-02 18:00

STMicroelectronics NV, the semiconductor giant, is planning to make a final decision by the end of 2026 on further expanding its chip manufacturing plant in Crolles, France. This move is driven by explosive growth in demand for silicon photonics technology from artificial intelligence data centers.

The company's CEO, Jean-Marc Chery, made this announcement while attending an industry conference in Geneva, Switzerland, organized by BNP Paribas. He noted that AI data center infrastructure is rapidly transitioning towards "Near-Package Optics" technology. This evolution aims to reduce the physical distance between optical engines and processors.

This technological shift is directly creating an urgent need for high-speed optoelectronic interconnect capacity. Consequently, the company must decide by the end of this year on making additional capacity investments in the Crolles facility. Chery emphasized that the expansion is highly likely to proceed.
