Mistral Develops Cybersecurity AI Model for European Banks in Response to Anthropic's Mythos

Deep News05-14

French artificial intelligence startup Mistral AI is aiming to address a gap in the European banking sector's cybersecurity AI capabilities, positioning itself as a local alternative to American counterparts.

According to reports, Mistral is in discussions with European banks regarding the deployment of its in-house developed cybersecurity AI model, which is seen as a direct response to Anthropic's Mythos.

Due to Mythos's strict access restrictions, European financial institutions have largely been unable to utilize a tool considered capable of identifying network vulnerabilities at unprecedented speed and scale, creating a potential security defense gap.

Mistral's CEO, Arthur Mensch, stated during a hearing at the French National Assembly on Tuesday that maintaining autonomous control over such technology is essential. "You cannot allow Mythos to scan the source code of the French military. We must find a solution."

**Mythos Triggers Global Security Alerts, Excluding European Institutions**

Anthropic's release of Mythos and subsequent restriction of access has sparked widespread concern globally about AI-powered hacking capabilities, fueling an arms race among model developers.

Currently, Mythos is available only to a select group of partners who are testing its capabilities and strengthening their defenses. The model's ability to autonomously launch attacks has prompted the White House to consider an executive order requiring safety reviews for new AI models before public release.

European financial institutions' exclusion from Mythos access has heightened concerns about a transatlantic security gap.

**Narrative of Local Alternatives and Sovereign Security**

Mistral is expected to market its new model as a low-risk, local alternative. While significantly smaller in user adoption and revenue compared to its American rivals, Mistral's French identity provides unique strategic value—especially given European governments' heightened sensitivity regarding data sovereignty and technological dependency.

Arthur Mensch characterized some of the discourse surrounding Mythos as "fear-mongering," noting that existing technologies from companies like Mistral and American firms are already capable of detecting network vulnerabilities. However, the actual capabilities of Mistral's in-house model compared to Mythos remain unclear, and a specific release date has not been announced.

Meanwhile, OpenAI has launched its own specialized cybersecurity model, GPT-5.5-Cyber, and has granted access to several major European corporations, including Spanish bank BBVA.

Following a funding round in September last year, Mistral achieved a valuation of 12 billion euros. The round raised 1.3 billion euros and was led by Dutch chip equipment manufacturer ASML.

Regarding financial clients, Mistral has secured HSBC Holdings Plc and BNP Paribas, providing an established channel and trust foundation for promoting its new cybersecurity product within the European banking industry.
