In a recent collaborative effort, more than 60 technicians from the power supply departments of Haining City in Zhejiang Province and Hanshan County in Anhui Province gathered at the Yangguang Shiji Cheng residential community in Hanshan. Following a coordinated command, the teams dispersed to their assigned work zones with toolkits in hand to commence a live-line replacement operation for power distribution equipment.
The extensive work, which began at 8 a.m. and concluded around 6 p.m., successfully replaced four aging pad-mounted transformers and one ring main unit. Remarkably, the entire process was completed without any interruption to the daily lives of the 1,283 households in the community. Air conditioners continued to run and meals were cooked as usual, with residents experiencing a complete "zero-awareness" of the significant upgrade happening around them.
"In the past, replacing this many pieces of equipment, affecting so many residents, would have required multiple separate operations," explained Shu Lei, Director of the Operation and Maintenance Department at the State Grid Hanshan County Power Supply Company. "This time, we managed to replace all the equipment in a single day, and it was done without the residents even noticing."
The Yangguang Shiji Cheng community, nearly two decades old, is the largest residential area in Hanshan County with over 4,000 households. Its power distribution equipment had been in service for a long time, showing evident signs of aging and mechanical issues like mechanism jamming. After preliminary assessments, the State Grid Hanshan County Power Supply Company decided to replace a portion of the community's equipment, a project impacting 1,283 households.
To accomplish this, over 20 staff members from the State Grid Haining City Power Supply Company traveled approximately 400 kilometers to Hanshan County. They joined forces with local technicians to form a 60-plus person task force, which was then organized into specialized teams for tasks such as power supply safeguarding, equipment hoisting, and on-site construction.
"The key to this operation was maintaining an uninterrupted power supply throughout. The sequence of operations and coordination between personnel had an extremely low margin for error, especially during the synchronized grid-connection phase, which required both speed and precision," Shu Lei noted. The operation deployed a total of eight power generation vehicles and introduced the wireless synchronized grid-connection technology from the State Grid Haining City Power Supply Company to enable the live-line work.
"We specially drove a hydrogen energy storage power generation vehicle from Zhejiang to operate near the community's kindergarten," explained Chang Wei, Director of the Xiashi Power Supply Station under the State Grid Haining City Power Supply Company. The hydrogen-powered vehicle offers advantages of zero emissions and low noise, making it ideal for sensitive areas like schools and residential neighborhoods.
"Our air conditioner, refrigerator, and kitchen appliances worked normally all day. We didn't have to plan around a power outage at all!" said Liu Huanian, a resident of the community, who confirmed that her home never lost power during the entire day.
"By coordinating construction manpower across provincial lines and utilizing new power supply protection equipment, we broke through the limitations of maintenance resources within a single county," Shu Lei summarized. "This achieved cross-regional personnel integration, equipment sharing, and technology exchange." He added that the upgraded power distribution network in the Yangguang Shiji Cheng community now boasts significantly enhanced safety and stability, better equipping it to ensure reliable power supply during peak summer demand periods.
