Hebei University of Technology is actively promoting the "going global" initiative in higher education. Leveraging its strengths in first-class disciplines, the university has established an undergraduate-level overseas campus in Finland—the Hebei University of Technology Finland Campus. The Finland Campus focuses on "New Engineering" disciplines such as Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Energy and Power Engineering, and Computer Science. It boasts a student body of over 1,000, including more than 600 international students. Through years of exploration, the Finland Campus has established a win-win cooperation model characterized by "light assets, soft investment, and high efficiency." It has achieved remarkable results in talent cultivation, faculty development, scientific collaboration, and cultural exchange, becoming a significant platform for Chinese universities to participate in global education governance and advance high-level opening-up.
Facing common challenges in overseas campus operations, such as high resource investment and weak sustainability, the university has engaged in deep collaboration with the Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT) in Finland. Together, they have pioneered a new approach to schooling based on "light assets, soft investment, and high efficiency." By utilizing the existing hardware facilities of the partner institution, the campus exports China's "New Engineering" educational philosophy, faculty resources, curriculum systems, and brand assets, achieving the sharing of high-quality resources. The Finland Campus has innovatively established a "China-Europe equal ratio" enrollment mechanism, bringing together over a thousand students and faculty from more than 70 countries to create an immersive and open international educational environment.
The Finland Campus is dedicated to building a collaborative and diverse faculty system involving both Chinese and international educators. Over the past six years, it has dispatched 90 outstanding faculty members to Finland, who have delivered over 180 courses entirely in English, thereby promoting the internationalization of teaching. Leveraging platforms such as teaching practice bases in Finland and Sino-Finnish faculty workshops, the campus facilitates the deep integration of teaching philosophies and methods. This has led to the normalization of faculty interaction and the synchronization of professional development, significantly enhancing the international teaching capabilities and cross-cultural collaboration skills of educators from both sides.
The Finland Campus deeply integrates the strengths of both parties in engineering education. Upholding its distinctive educational philosophy of "integrating engineering with holistic development and enlightening the mind," the campus has constructed a "New Engineering" talent cultivation system characterized by an international perspective. It aims to cultivate international engineering talents who possess multilingual communication skills, interdisciplinary literacy, and an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit. The outcomes of this educational approach have been significant, with the average further study rate for the first two graduating classes reaching 84.5%. Among the 2025 cohort pursuing studies abroad, 54.55% were admitted to universities ranked within the top 20 in the QS World University Rankings, demonstrating the widely recognized quality of its talent cultivation.
The Finland Campus has established a multi-dimensional exchange platform covering government, industry, and academia, promoting practical cooperation between the two sides in education, technology, and culture. Through various channels such as academic exchanges, cultural activities, and university-industry partnerships, the campus not only enhances mutual understanding and friendship but also serves as an important window to showcase China's development achievements and promote Chinese culture. It contributes the university's strength to facilitating mutual learning among civilizations and telling China's story well.
