A new commercial destination, Shangjieli Mall Ronghuicheng, is set to officially open on Zhongshan Road in Qingdao on August 15. This marks a significant milestone in the preservation and revitalization of the historic Zhongshan Road area.
Positioned as a "youthful exploration center," the project blends commercial, cultural tourism, and social functions. After opening, it will collaborate with nearby attractions such as Zhanqiao Pier, St. Michael's Cathedral, and Pichai Courtyard to rejuvenate the old city's commercial energy, establishing itself as a trendy new landmark for young consumers.
To celebrate the launch, Shangjieli Mall will host a series of events under the theme "Free and Easy, A Fresh Start." Activities include all-day live performances by four local Qingdao indie bands, an anime carnival, a swing dance party, and a Mediterranean fermentation lifestyle festival that integrates coastal city living. The Transformers licensed store, Jinganghui, will also debut alongside the mall.
The project will distribute 10,000 postcards featuring the old city's scenery and offer promotional deals like group purchase coupons and gifts with purchase to attract visitors. Zhongshan Road, one of Qingdao's oldest commercial streets since its founding, carries over a century of commercial and historical memory. In recent years, the city has been transforming this area from a traditional shopping street into a "urban renewal demonstration zone" through building renovations, business updates, and cultural tourism integration.
Developed by Yueronghui Asset Management, the 76,000-square-meter urban renewal project respects the original architectural texture and street scale of the old city while injecting modern content tailored to young lifestyles. The design features transparent glass curtain walls and open public spaces, replacing the enclosed feel of traditional department stores. Indoor and outdoor pathways connect seamlessly, blending the lively atmosphere of Zhongshan Road with the contemporary aesthetic needed for youthful consumption. By day, it serves as an open space for urban life and tourism; by night, lighting and storefronts enhance the night-time economy in the city's core.
A standout feature is the ninth-floor observation deck, offering panoramic views of the old city's red-tiled roofs, courtyards, and the Jiaozhou Bay coastline. Visitors can see landmarks like St. Michael's Cathedral, Zhanqiao Pier, and Signal Hill, making it a potential new "Instagram hotspot" and urban viewing point.
The mall has assembled over 110 brands across diverse categories, including lifestyle retail, cultural reading, immersive entertainment, and specialty dining. It features nostalgic brands familiar to Qingdao locals, as well as many first-time arrivals in northern China, Shandong Province, or the city itself. Notable examples include the return of Hongwu Steak from the former Parkson department store, alongside its new youth-oriented brand Best 1998 Fusion Western Restaurant; the Shandong debut of Mammoth Bookstore; and northern China firsts for Anime Dimension, Jinganghui, Star Space Theater, PARTYKING, and Xinghehui Fitness.
The dining scene includes new tea brands like霸王茶姬 and茉酸奶, alongside local seafood restaurants such as Deng An Chuan Kao An and Lao Chuan Zhang Seafood Noodles. A custom IP supermarket named Pulisen, with 40% imported goods, offers high-quality daily essentials for visitors. The opening of Shangjieli Mall not only boosts foot traffic and spending in the Zhongshan Road area but also serves as a model for Qingdao's historic district preservation. By introducing premium brands and diverse offerings, it drives local employment and commercial activity, shifting the area from a purely historical sightseeing zone to a blended "commerce, tourism, and culture" renewal hub, unlocking the full commercial and cultural tourism potential of Zhongshan Road's historic district.
