As AI intensifies competition for entry-level white-collar positions and simultaneously fuels massive demand for computing infrastructure and advanced manufacturing, skilled workers—from semiconductor production lines in South Korea to data centers in the United States—are becoming the core assets for which tech giants and financial institutions compete fiercely.

South Korea's "Younger" Chip Lines and Lucrative Pay

At Chungbuk Semiconductor High School, southeast of Seoul, students in their final year are not preparing for university entrance exams. Instead, they focus on electronic circuit design, cleanroom protocols, pollution control, calculus, and chemistry. This highly targeted vocational education leads to exceptional employment rates: 96.4% of the school's graduates have job offers by graduation, with about a quarter directly entering Samsung Electronics.

Seventeen-year-old senior Rho Jun-sik has already received a job offer from Samsung. According to reports from The Korea Herald, the average annual salary for Samsung Electronics employees last year was 158 million won (approximately $107,300). Even more attractive is the potential for a massive bonus. Under Samsung's latest union labor agreement, should profit targets be achieved, workers in its semiconductor division—including assembly line operators—could receive up to $400,000 (approx. 2.7 million yuan) in bonuses next year. This career path, offering high certainty and substantial rewards, is drawing an increasing number of South Korean youth away from traditional universities.

Why Just White-Collar Degrees Are Losing Ground

The choices made by South Korean teenagers reflect a deep disruption of traditional career ladders by AI. As AI technology becomes more widespread, competition for entry-level positions among university graduates is intensifying. Data shows that by the second quarter of 2026, the number of unemployed people with a university degree or higher in South Korea is expected to exceed 480,000, a five-year high. The unemployment rate for those aged 15 to 29 has also risen to 7.2%.

This phenomenon of "degree devaluation" resonates globally. In the United States, the unemployment rate for workers with at least a bachelor's degree has reached 2.7%, a high not seen since 2015. Young people have experienced their worst summer job market in nearly 80 years. While AI improves productivity, it is accelerating the replacement of basic administrative and analytical roles, meaning a traditional four-year degree is no longer a guaranteed shield for securing a high-paying, stable job.

Global Capital Pours In, Skilled Workers Become Bottleneck for Infrastructure Expansion

In stark contrast to the cooling white-collar job market, the AI wave has generated immense physical demand for computing infrastructure and advanced manufacturing. Skilled workers are now a critical bottleneck for global tech and industrial expansion. According to a McKinsey report, the U.S. semiconductor industry is expected to face a shortage of approximately 157,000 skilled workers by 2030. Currently, one in five U.S. semiconductor workers does not have a university degree, yet the industry's average annual salary in 2020 was already around $170,000.

To address this talent gap, global giants are investing heavily in skills training. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon noted that major industrial projects, such as shipbuilding, will urgently need 300,000 electricians and welders over the next five to ten years, announcing a $24 million investment in submarine manufacturing and employee training. Mark Zuckerberg's Meta has launched a $115 million "American Workforce Institute" project, specifically to train data center technicians and guarantee them jobs. Additionally, Lowe's CEO Marvin Ellison announced a $250 million investment to train 250,000 skilled workers in plumbing, carpentry, and electrical fields over the next decade, addressing the structural shortage of skilled talent in the AI era.
