Hong Kong's stock market, as represented by the Hang Seng Composite Index, recorded a 0.8% decrease during August.
The Hang Seng Index and the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index fell by 1.2% and 1.1%, respectively. In contrast, the Hang Seng Volatility Index and the Hang Seng China Enterprises Volatility Index both dropped by 15% and 16%, settling at 18 and 20 points.
The Hang Seng Tech Index, which tracks leading technology companies listed in Hong Kong, experienced a 4.3% decline in August. Conversely, the Hang Seng Biotechnology Index, which monitors major biotech firms in the city, posted a notable 11.7% gain for the same period.
The Hang Seng Stock Connect China 500 Index, measuring the performance of the 500 largest companies in Hong Kong and Mainland China, saw a slight uptick of 0.1% in August. Meanwhile, the Hang Seng A-share 300 Index, which tracks the 300 largest Mainland Chinese companies, rose by 0.6%.
Among the industry sub-indexes within the Hang Seng Composite Index, the materials sector was the top performer with an 11.0% surge, while consumer staples lagged behind with a 6.1% drop.
Within the broader Hang Seng Index family, the Hang Seng Stock Connect AI Infrastructure Index led all others with a strong 17.3% advance. It was followed by the Hang Seng A-share Copper Industry Index (up 15.7%) and the Hang Seng A-share Electronic Components Index (up 14.1%).
In the thematic index category, the Hang Seng Stock Connect Innovative Drug and Healthcare Index was the standout for the Hong Kong market with a 9.4% rise. For the Mainland/cross-market segment, the Hang Seng Stock Connect China Tech Selected 50 Index performed best with a 9.6% gain.
For ESG-focused indices, the Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index was the leading Hong Kong index, rising 0.5%, while the Hang Seng A-share Corporate Sustainability Benchmark Index topped the Mainland/cross-market indices with a 1.5% increase.
Regarding factor indices, the Hang Seng Large-Mid Cap Size Full Selection Index, which tracks the "size" factor, slipped just 0.1% in August, outperforming all other factor-based full selection indices in the Hong Kong market. In the Mainland market, the Hang Seng A-share Size Full Selection Index was the top performer, climbing 4.1%.
The Hang Seng Stock Connect Greater Bay Area Composite Index advanced by 1.5% during the month.
As of August 31, the total assets under management for products passively tracking the Hang Seng Index series stood at approximately USD 108.93 billion, reflecting a 3.3% month-on-month decrease. Exchange-traded products linked to the Hang Seng Index, the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index, and the Hang Seng Tech Index held assets of about USD 21.6 billion (-3.1%), USD 8 billion (+0.2%), and USD 38.2 billion (-5.1%), respectively.
